i once had a situation where the fuel pump stopped working one day. took it out, was working, gave it a few taps with the hammer for good measure.
has done over a 1000 miles on/off road and never missed a beat since, so perhaps just a temperemental one.
or a dodgy relay.
easy to get it running for the drive home though, just run a wire from your side lamp to the fuel pump supply and it'' get you home if its a relay fault.
