Evening chaps, anybody out there done one and do you have some tips. My indie reckons my slightly rough idle which I ( to my shame) have studiously ignored is a lack of bumps. He says he thinks the engine is OK otherwise. So I'm going to get cracking on it soon.

'Slightly rough idle' could be a number of things, my D2 V8 has over 180K on the engine and still working fine, so don't be in a huge rush to spend your hard earned money.

Depending on 'which' V8, the job isn't too bad, sump off, front cover off, inlet manifold and fittings off, Rockers and pushrods off,pull the lifters undo the camshaft drive sprocket retaining bolts and withdraw camshaft gear, chain and crankshaft gear. Then carefully withdraw the camshaft.

I've not seen a badly worn V8 cam in 6 engines that were all well past their best. I'd be inclined to get a valve lift height check on each valve to be sure that there is in fact a problem.

A cr&ppy MAF would give you those symptoms.

would a worn cam not give you a flat spot / lack of umph through out the rev range not just on tick over ??. As above check MAF sensor ect.
 
Funny a couple of you have mentioned the MAF sensor - when I had paid for the car (from a dealer) I was presented with a box of spare parts. When I got home and opened it up amongst other things were three used MAF sensors.
Naturally I've still got them, I think that there is Lucas and Bosch. Also there was a new set of plugs and leads fitted.
I'll definitely look into the sensor possibility - 10 minutes with a screwdriver has got to be a no brainer compared to a weekend of oily bits.
The indie was pretty certain though in his diag. There is a misfire but it seems to be random and vanishes on throttle input.

That would ring alarm bells for me.
 
Sorry, should have said it's just the same whether on gas or petrol, hot or cold.

Lambdas shouldn't affect it cold but I wonder how it runs if you disconnect them, all the same? Just a thought.
 
you need to get some live data.. see what the Air Mass readings are and the O2 sensors. the O2 sensors and MAF work in unison with the fuel metering..

wonder if theo2 sensors are failing, hence the spare MAFs... they can be an arse to get out if they have been in a while.. you'll need heat and stillsons
 
Evening Adam, you moved house yet ??? How's the little un ????.

My o2 sensors came straight out but I did run the car up the road and back and got them nice and hot first
 
Cam change is reasonably straightforward. Remember to reprime the oil pump. I found the worst part was threading the new cam in as it heavy difficult to support and slippy. I used a bent wire in a hole in the far end of the cam for support. This was a Kent though. After big mileages the tappets don't come out from the top though.
 
PS maf can cause underfueling if even slightly out of spec. They aren't terribly unreliable but do occasionally cause major issues. The best test is to unplug whilst running this should cause a slight blip if there's no change dodgy maf. The voltages are available for proper testing.
Underfueling can cause hesitation and lean misfires and general conking out.
