So, tap the cats to see if anything rattles ?

She just sailed through her emissions test,

the tester was astonished !

nope i can't find it
basically, it would idle fine, but under hard acceleration i'd loud exhaust type noises, as though i had a hole in the exhaust manifold, or possibly a back fire, but i think yours is different to that
what colour are your plugs? have you checked them?

Oh, one other source of noise was really only noticeable when I was stopped alongside an ARMCO, was a loud rattling popping sound.
Was an exhaust gasket that had blown. LOL

And I’ll check
The plugs tomorrow.
I actually have 8 lovely new ones to slip in -if I can Bloody reach - is a comically long ratchet extension required ? Or will a standard 6 incher do the trick ?

Hi again,

ok this definitely sounds exhaust-related.
Would I be right in thinking that any restriction in back-pressure would hurt performance and fuel economy ?

if I want to replace the rusty pipes can anyone recommend a decent (though not wallet-scaring) source / supplier / brand ?

is it worth trying to get a pre-loved stainless system over a new rot-prone one ?

thanks again

Bob

Get a new one from Double S.

Yes, if the gases cannot escape it will affect power. You could try flooring it and see if any bits of cat blow out the back. Not sure how to clear the cat as the pipe bends. Maybe take the cat sections and ram a flexible bit of mains hose down there and punch it out? Expensive if wrong though!

Not really, it just sounds a bit ‘breathy’ and wheezy.

I’m just squinting at the cost of exhausts but seems like a false economy not to go stainless…. Even if it does cost £££ upfront
Camshaft worn and not letting the inlets open fully? Making it work hard to get enough air volume?

I’m hoping not…. Engine was replaced around 60,000 miles ago…
Noticed there are no heat shields on the manifolds but they’re wrapped in some kind of white rope-like material.
The exhaust does look
Pretty rusted up and has been welded in a few places

If it had an engine transplant they may have chiselled the heat-shields off and then wrapped the manifolds. Common enough.
