not sure what pump the old 4 cylinder would use but the orginal v8 is a fecet type which normally ticks with igntion on. yours could really be any type if its been converted and this may be your problem, maybe!

if you have a good spark but it still wont run it probably isnt the amp as that provides the good spark. my early v8 doesnt even have an amp.

so do you have a decent ammount of fuel getting through? we need to get the basics sorted first.
It's prob a pump meant for the original N/A engine, I don't know if the previous owner put another one in when they put the V8 in. And Yes, looking through my clear fuel filter I can see there is lots of fuel running through it. I started it yesterday after the RAC towed me back home the day before, and it started straight away, and idled for about 30 mins, and it didn't cut out. I didn't want to take it on a road trip incase it broke down again. So let me get this right, if I get a pump anyway, if I ask for a v8 one, will it bolt straight onto the fittings, and pipes that the old ones on, or will I have to do any adaptions do you know?

not sure what the 4 cylinder pumps are mate , i am a v8 man. I found the old facet type pumps made by bearmach on lr direct for £20.

if it is the facet type it comes on a pair or rubber mounts which may well ba knackered and they have a funny thread so I would get the nuts and washers too. its all only a couple of pounds.

dont ignore the spark question though, you need to know if thats what keeps failing. each time it dies see if you can get a good blue spark if not it could be the amp as the others say , if you have one . the coils are also known to barstools like this

The AA guy did check the spark when it was broken down. He came to the conclusion he didn't know what it was, and thats what he put in the paper he gave me after towing me home. All he moaned about was his clutch smoking when he towed me up a steep hill with his van, he was useless. It seems these days if they haven't got a PC to plug you into they cant be bothered, or haven't got a clue! If it was the spark, I would of thought he would of said for sure, as it would have been obvious wouldn't it? as he did test it while I was broken down.

I'm going on holiday tomorrow, and going to a' landy' swapmeet while I'm away at beaulea (can never spell that word! lol) so what I think I'll do is replace all the bits that it could be anyway, thats been mentioned. that way at least I'll know what I have on there is new, and then keep the old stuff as spares just to be sure.

Thinking about it, I think I'm going to keep my V8 as it's only done 20,000, and I love it; and get a gas conversion as a compromise. that'll only set me back £1,200 odd, as to £2,000 odd for a 200tdi. And I have an LPG garage in Dover. Then maybe I can ditch my modern, but very boring, very reliable low mileage citroen C5, and use the landy as my daily driver, as well as afford to go on more greenlane trips with only 1 car to run. Sonds like a plan to me, what do they say? 'it's a landrover thing, you wouldn't understand'.:D

But seriously though, thank you, and everyone else for all your help in pointing me to the possible problems it can be, at least it's not serious, just one of those annoying things.

Oh one last thing incase some didn't realize, even on the rover sd1 v8 engine, you DON'T need to use lead suppliments. I got that from 'liverage' incase people are using it thinking they have too, as it's getting harder to get hold of now, not to mention expensive!

your right about the lead, its only the very very earliest rover v8's in the "p" cars that need it.

I was glad to learn that as my engine is circa 1974

gas sucks!
Why do you say that jai? I've had it in other classics, i.e. a classic Vw camper without many probs. Is there something about landy v8's that doesn't go well with gas? I know the price of it is creeping up now, so it's less attractive. We really are ripped off big time in this country! :(
