Hi guys,

my 2001 V6 Freelander has started misfiring on tick-over and is running hot.
I can't notice ant missfires at higher revs, but it does seem a bit low on power.

I recently replaced the thermostat housing (which turned out to be a Rover 75 one) which developed a catastrophic leak when the engine got to temperature.
Could I have cooked a head gasket(s)?

Helpful as ever, my local Landrover dealer tells me a cooked gasket could mean a knackered head, which would mean a new engine. I'm hoping he's just being a dealer!

It's pretty much constant, but I don't think it's 100% of the time.
However I just drove from Taunton to Ivybridge (70m ish) at a fair rate of knots with no problems at all.
I should also say it doesn't appear to be losing much water, although I'll check this again at lunchtime.

[edit] I checked - the water has gone from Max to Min in about 4 days [/edit]

Any ideas, or are there too many possibilities?

Hi,

Is it still running hot? I think if it was me, although I wouldn't want to spend the cash I'd be thinking of getting it diagnosed because misfiring can be caused by so many different things.

Has it started misfiring since you did the thermostat? If so, did you remove/disturb the plug-leads/coil packs for the front bank when you did the thermostat housing? Just wondering if you did and if you have put the leads back in the correct order? The coil pack when looking at them are 3-1-5, so the left coil pack needs to go to the middle plug, the middle coil to the left plug, and the right coil to the right plug.

See it all the time tis all as many people assume the coil packs are positioned 1-3-5 and often causes the faults you describe.
 
It wasn't me who did it, but I guess it's possible.
Although it didn't seem to be missing when I first got it back, and definitely got worse over time.
I've stopped driving it now as it's so bad.
Thanks for the tip though, I'll check it out.
 
OK faults diagnosed.

Missfiring was because of old plugs. Apparently I also needed 2 new coil packs, but opted to clean the old insulators instead and these seem to be ok now.
Overheating/minor water loss due to minor radiator leak. To be fixed.

Allways the bloody coils!
I had the same trouble but I've only got two---1.8
Though some will say thats the least of our problems:):)
