Has anyone ever tried fitting the engine and gearbox out of a V6 MG ZS in a Freelander?
I just spotted this, and thought of it. If do-able would give a very nice upgrade
MG ZS 2.5 V6 | United Kingdom | Gumtree

I was considering this but decided that a FWD Freelander was pointless. There is way too much torque for the primitive front suspension to maintain traction.
The ZS180 suspension has been sorted so can use the power. The Freelander can't, even with 1.8 it spins the wheels in FWD.
I have a KV6 and ZS180 box in my workshop, waiting for a vehicle. I'm thinking KV6 powered F!!

True about spinning wheels in FWD only. I thought it was just my Hankook all terrain tyres were the problem. Might be great in mud and snow but not much use on wet roads.

And noisy as hell. :(

I don't suppose it is possible to bolt the IRD onto the ZS gearbox?

Edit, just read about the F. Now that would be an upgrade. Might loose the boot though and make it even more tail happy but awsome fun.

The ZS180 box needs extensive machining to take the IRD. Even when the machining is complete, the box needs to have most U spec Freelander box mechanicals transfered over. I did look into it but never got round to doing the conversion. I needed a larger vehicle, so the Freelander V6 was replaced by a D3.

I am after a project and a KV6 powered F looks just the ticket.
Boot space won't change much, if at all. The KV6 will fit in the F engine bay. The front bulkhead will need some modification, but not much. The fuel tank housing needs to be cut away slightly and the tank will need to be custom made slightly narrower.
Otherwise, it's just going to be a bolt up and wiring jobs. The suspension will need to be pumped up slightly more to counter the extra 50+ Kg's of the KV6. Otherwise it should be a good conversion. The exhaust will be fun to make but will sound fantastic with each cylinder bank having its own tailpipe.

 Six exhausts!!!!!

LOL, Sounds fun but a smaller tank with a V6??? Methinks you'll be filling up every 50 miles. :p

You might need to seperate the front and rear suspension if the engine is much heavier than a 1.8. I think some have done it but you'll end up with 4 valves to pump up instead of two.

This is well worth watching. The guy makes an exhaust for a Subaru flat six

It would only have 2 tail pipes, just like the standard F system. I'd have the odds exiting on one side and evens exiting on the other. Being a V6, there's no need to have a balancer pipe between the banks. It will sound awesome.
The fuel tank capacity will only drop by 5 litres, so not too bad. It will hold more than enough for a weekend toy.

LOL, I know'd that. Just yanking ya leg, but it sounds really awesome. F's are so cheap these days peeps are practically giving them away so wouldn't need to be all that expensive.

Ah humour, I missed it.
Sadly my VVC F is worth almost nothing. I could convert it to KV6 power then sell off the original VVC engine to offset some of the conversion cost.
Something for the summer I think.

No No No!
An F is for driving in the summer, not working on. :)

Did ya check out the link. Guy did a brilliant job.

Yes I did. Lovely job.
I'm kinda spoilt as I have access to an Audi TT Roadster for summer fun too. It's the wife's play thing.

Thats no good, that's her toy. Try suggesting you take it for a track day and see what she says.

No!
Get the V6 in now and have YOUR toy for the summer.

Rakeway motorsport If you really want a manual option for the V6, give them a call as they did the conversions on the M-Sport Freelanders. They're not cheap though.
Infact, you'd probably need a few people interested before they would even consider it. I was informed by an M-Sport owner that the original conversions cost around £6000 but this was because of the cost of the tooling, development etc. Rakeway have the tooling for the conversion, so it seems silly they would not want to offer the conversions commercially.
