hi all,
I fairly recently got my 300tdi disco as an off reader, it was already setup, and by no means perfect, I've already replaced the turbo cartridge, and done front crank seal and timing belt.
I love the truck I must say and love how easy they are to work on.
Does anyone use their off-roader as a daily or drive it more often that just for off-roading and actually use it on road?
Is it worth getting a set of road wheels/tyres?
How have they been reliability wise doing some road mileage after taking some stick off road?

How much of an off roader is it? Mine's got a two inch lift, 265 mud terrains and it's my daily driver

I'm in a work van all week of which I do about 1000-1200 miles a week in but I've only used the truck of a weekend and only when about to go off roading, but I'd like to use it more often, I use my seat Leon cupra R most of the weekend
 
One little question , you may need to ask yourself.
Is whether this is your only means of transport, If you are going to a Pay and Play , then their is a potential for stuff to break.

If this is your only vehicle then you could find yourself with a problem, this I think is why most people do not rely on their "toy" as a daily driver.

Also if you are doing 200+ miles a day in it you'll need to allow more travelling time to get to your destination
 
I use my disco 1 off roader as daily driver , its not as geared up as some extreme off roaders and ive put all a/t tyres on
 
Yeah I wouldn't go using the disco as my only vehicle as I know it will break now and then, I just wanted to get some more use out of it, I need to sort the steering out on it at some point before I go doing more road miles as it wanders a lot and there's a fair bit of play in the steering, the track rod is slightly bent which doesn't help this

I also need to meet people that actually go off roading, as at the moment I'm going solo when off roading

Solo greenlaning is not something that is recommended, unless you know the lane and the ground conditions very well. Also, I assume you are researching that the greenlane is open and nut under any form of restriction? If however you are talking about P&P, then yes it is more enjoyable if you have a few friends along in their own motors.

If you look at the regional / greenlaning / offroading section you may find like minded souls who will be able to help you out.

When i had my Disco td5 i was commuting 90 miles a day in it, that included some gentle green laning( solo but i know the lane well as walk it regularly ) reliability wise I simply fixed the minor advisories ( link rod and track arm play) that the MOT had thrown up from previous owner, waxoyled the chassis and got on with it, only probs i had was a puncture from green laning, bonus was taking it steady it got 31 mpg too which was nice but that was on road biased A/T tyres never missed a beat

as mentioned above it will take longer to get where you're going discos aint meant for motorways or dual carriageways for that matter really, yes it sat at 70-80 quite nicely but takes time to get to that speed so you cant just pull out and go round lorries like you would in a car as takes so long to build up the speed if your stuck behind a truck so have to wait for a gap which can be frustrating

With the freelander, different kettle of fish yes it did the same journey for 3 months but not without protest and various electrical issues and near breakdowns and misfires

for gentle greenlaning and a short ish commute id have no problems recommending a disco as a daily i used to arrive in comfort and happier that i did in my current tdi golf but if your doing daft miles and serious mud plugging get a mile muncher as a daily and keep the disco as a toy
 
This is what I think I'll do, keep the disco stored until I fancy doing some Greenlaning and pay and plays, only thing I worry about is getting back from these places if the truck sustains damage along the way, but I always make sure it's ship shape and ready for an off roading session to give it the best possible chance at surviving the journey home

Have faith, its a land rover made out of grit stone and iron ore it wont break just by breathing on it it will get you home,

key is do the prep before hand,
Full service and a good once over for any minor issues should be the first thing to do before paying and playing, fix the minor niggles it will have before they become big niggles

it it's going to pay and play it will be more extreme than green laning so make adjustments accordingly, steering guards and diff guards can be had relatively cheaply or make them yourself if your a novice ( like me) no need for expensive lift kits or massive tyres just make sure its oin fine fettle and play it sensible
 
Yeah I know they're fairly tough and as a mechanic I check for anything mechanically wrong with it, I know it has its niggles but it's pretty solid, has all the diff and front steering guards, another question, will leaving it in diff lock for a whole off roading session cause excessive strain on the diffs?
 
Went solo green laning in mine dozens of times never needed diff lock or even low range most of the time. Sadly storm Doris killed my girl
