Looking for a bit of advice, I have just bought and fitted my first winch onto a 1993 Defender, looked on difflock about bedding the motor/gears in etc. however I am struggling to get the cable back on neatly, any tips or suggestions? Its steel cable by the way. Or can anyone give me a pic of what is deemed acceptable to see if mine matches.

winding on is normally completed after use, using another person to operate the control whilst the other feeds the rope using your leg to guide it. DONT let it slide throu hands.
 
To get the cable on your winch the first time correctly you must do so on load e.g. Winch another vehicle towards yours whilst laying the cable evenly across the drum, that then cures the cable. Wire cable is a pain in the arse at the best of times, but after you do the above it will be more easier wind in the cable.
 
keeping the cable well oiled will make it much easier to handle. It will also help pull out any flat spots that do occur. Winch cables generally rust from the inside out so the oil layer on the outside prevents the water ingress.

defo aint a two man job if done under load.Also run it round ya leg and watch it fall off.Get good gloves n use them.
 
Thanks for all the advice guys, I put it on a tree strop the first time I used it as per diff lock to putstrain on it and then took it off & on the drum several times and it seems to be a good bit tidier now, still not line by line though. I would get sethetic rope but not at that price on my wages
 
The way I wind my cable on my winch evenly is to pull the cable out in a straight line with a good pair of gloves and keeping hands away from the fairleads/rollers. Hold the cable with one hand and operate the controller with the other hand, keep the cable as tight as possible as you wind in and if you go a bit wide tap the cable snug with a hammer to keep it neat. When you have less than a metre left clip that to your anchor point than blip the winch until it takes up the slack but not tight.
