Hiya all

My 1.8XEI (05 plate) has been in the LR garage since last Friday, originally it went in due to no heat from the vents to defrost the ice from the windscreen, dampness on the inside of the windscreen and ? clutch slipping. (I'm a girlie, so dont know too much about cars!)
OK....... the garage phoned my to say the flywheel was unevenly worn and would need replacing, along with the clutch, they have also said there was a leak from the gearbox!!

I bought this car from a main dealer garage mid august 2006, it had an "A" service before I bought it, it had done 6,500 at the time of purchase. It has now done 7,800 miles to date.
The warranty ends May 2008. It also has another 2 free services with the car.

The car is still at the garage so I have said that I am going in to sort it out with the garage tomorrow as I am not happy with them selling me a 2nd hand car with such problems!

Any suggestions on what I should do please?

My questions are

1. How long does it take for a fly wheel to wear enough to become a problem.

2. Do you think this should have been picked up by the garage before I bought it as it has only done 1,300 miles since the service.

3. Are there any long term side effects from this - I had read that the following:
No engine is going to survive long at high rpms if itÂ’s out of balance. And no engine is going to last in a high-mileage application if the crank is bending and flexing because of static or dynamic imbalances in the flywheel.

Many thanks for any help
Best wishes

i can't see how you can have uneven wear on a flywheel unless they mean it is scored which can only happen if its done a **** load of miles or the clutch pedal has been 'ridden'
not having seen the car my gut feeling is the garage is trying it on... get them to show you the leak. then get in the car and start the engine.
push the clutch pedal down slowly while trying to gently get it into 1st gear..
once you have it in 1st slowly let it back up till the clutch starts to bite.
if its less than abart 2cm difference then yer clutch is ok.
if its more than abart 3.5ish cm then its well on its way to being ferked.
inbetween 2ish and 3.5ish is just normal wear and they can't say if it worn unevenly with takin it out and looking at it.

... take it else where

Thanks for the reply

That is what they said, the flywheel is unevenly worn and they would replace that and the clutch - Which they have done - not see the car yet as they said they would bring it back to me, but havent so I am going to pick it up tomorrow and return their courtesy car.

It is being sorted out under warranty by LR.

Do you think this problem "could" have been picked up in a service 1,300 miles previous?

Cheers

ask them fur the old bits back and have them inspected by an independant assessor.
mind yu if its all under warranty - dont worrit too much.

An update on this.............

I got the FL back from LR garage. They had replaced the flywheel, clutch and replaced a seal in the gearbox as they said there was a leak in the gearbox!

I really was not happy to know I had only done 1,500 miles in this FL so I contacted the previous owner. She sent me a copy of a letter rejecting the vehicle for the following problems:

Mileage on rejection - 5,637

Replacement of TWO gearboxes
Replacement of Flywheel
Replacement of Clutch
Replacement of Steering Rack
Fuel Problem in engine

The problems addressed in the recent visit to LR garage:

Replacement of Flywheel
Replacement of Clutch
Repair of Gearbox leak
Problem with heating
Wet front Windscreen

Previous to the point of purchase, I asked the sales manif there had been any problems with the car and why the previous owner had sold it.
The response had been that there had been no previous problems and the previous owner had upgraded her FL.

If I had been informed of the correct information and the previous problems that the FL had encountered, I would never have purchased this vehicle.

I have contacted the LR service dept this morning and asked for full history, including warranty info, but they have not mentioned the replacing of the list below. They did mention the Steering Rack though.

Replacement of TWO gearboxes
Replacement of Flywheel
Replacement of Clutch
Fuel Problem in engine

I have been looking at The Sale of Goods Act 1979, amended in 1994 and Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 which say that when you buy goods from a trader they must fit the description, be of satisfactory quality - which includes lasting a reasonable length of time - and be fit for their purpose.

I am in the process of preparing my case. I have had a telephone conversation with the previous owner and she is prepared to provide evidence in court, if it goes that far.

Any help or suggestions please

Many thanks
