I welcome suggestions on what is best to paint the main frame and underside of a 101 FC. It seems to be covered with a thick black paint, but patches have come off and there is a little rust. Seems like a new coating would help to keep the beast alive a lot longer.

Shutz applied by spray gun is by far the best way to protect your vehicle imo...

Waxoil is OK...I do use it from time to time for odd jobs by brush...but it is just too thin and easily washed off for my liking.

Build Shutz up to whatever thickness you prefer!

From time to time I paint the underside of my 1991 Discovery with a mixture of Chain saw oil, which is cheapish and sticky, and grease and spend most of a day with a paint brush to do it. A mucky job, but it still passing the local equivalent of MOTs and has not needed any welding so far.

Where you from

The back body of a 101 is only held on with about 10 or 12 bolts and can be lifted off with 4 people, this way you can get into everything without laying on your back and getting rust in your eyes and make sure all the chassie gets cleaned and a new coat of protection.

I did have photos of the one that we cleaned but can't find them at the moment.

Minidod - that's amazing news! If I understand you correctly all I have to do is undo a dozen or so bolts and my 101 falls apart for easy painting? I can them treat the frame with whatever and also strip and re-paint all the body parts easily and at leisure. Any pictures welcome.

is it yellow by any chance? And did it recently come into Bangor Halfords? ;)

also, surely underbody seal with added waxoyl is the stuff, as it is brushable, thick and doesnt properly set, and also not very expensive?

after welding loads of landy chassis im finding the waxoil is not all that good for the chassis as it traps water and then rust's :( i do find better to paint it with hammerite
and then the **** dont stick to it as much ..and oil inside the chassis with waste oil just plug all the hole's up 1st,, fill it up drive around so it gets all over then pop the plug out and drain into tub :)
