VCU???

The Viscous Coupling Unit sits in the transfer box and allows the front and rear propshafts to rotate at different speeds - like a differential - BUT if the speed difference is great enough (like a slipping wheel in mud etc) then the Viscous FLuid inside thickens and begins to lock both propshafts together to allow them to be driven at the same speed and with an equal split of torque fore and aft.

Over time, the VCU can seize up solid and this can lead to transmission wind up snapping stuff - usually diffs - as it no longer allows the front and rear axles to turn at different speeds during cornering...BANG!

Running with a prop removed for extended periods 'simulates' the shafts turning at different speeds and as such the VCU is permanently in a locked up state which it was never designed for....cooking the poor thing!

The VCU locks the centre differential output shafts progressively when there is a rotational difference between front and rear output shafts.
 
Pardon me snowflake you posted & asked for opinions on that motor & I looked at it for 2 mins an thought why has the front
prop been missing for years vcu prob right away & so that will cost you money plus it has air issues & abs issues plus a months mot what else is hiding underneath?? I was trying to help you out as this is what you asked for or did I miss something.

not at all buddy... I just think it's pointless telling someone about blatantly obvious points... I'd stated the airbag issue so why comment on it... MOT history is basic so why comment on that, more so as a separate issue can lay behind the prop shaft, yet no mention was made by he

thanks for that, well explained.

I'll assume that it's already fooked, hence the prop being missing.

so it's currently a rear wheel drive only rangey... not that bad given that saaf eest lundun ain't got no mahntins to drive up!

So roughly, what's the cost involved with putting the vcu issue right?

It's up to you then, but there maybe a grands worth of repairs that are obvious. Others unknown. That is why they are selling it cheap. That is why they are not repairing it to sell, to recoup they would have to sell it at a much higher price than the market value. They are possibly making a little on the value they traded it in for.

I get that... but the airbags and prop are out in the open so stating them as fact is pointless... talking about the vcu on the other hand is not, and that's the sort of thing I was looking for... Dunlop airbags are about 90 quid each, issue with the pump then Labour charges, I'd say about 500 quid should cover it.

vcu... that's unknown, but the head lining is about 150 to replace. there's so many of them sagging that a few people have started businesses that cater to the problem, so no more cans of furniture glue to spray on and hope for the best.

it's an old car so it's never gunna be showroom condition, certainly not for a grand, but like the flat that grandma died in, it's a fixer upper.

And how much do you think a VCU is if you can get one and how much to fit it, then you need a new front prop. Has the VCU being seized damaged the front diff. If you get it and can do the jobs yourself maybe viable. But garages will rip you off for fun.

the car in my front garden is a 1968 coupe, which I'm modernising... Lexus ls400 engine and gearbox, prop shaft to be cut, re-wiring, then there's the rear axle, which is coming off a Jensen interceptor, as it will give me rear discs, which is better than drums and shoes.

Think I might be able to sort out the front prop!
