I have got this far without too much effort, but have no idea what it should look like..

I am preparing for the newbie **** takes, but the bottom line, is I haven't ever seen this bit of a gear box before, so wouldn't have a clue what it should look like..

even the haynes and google arn't being much help in getting a picture or any advice for me!!

if anyone could point me in the right direction, would be v helpful/..

After a very short drive, i suddenly couldn't change gear.. the clutch does disengage.. but I seem to be stuck in third.. also, where you normaly can only shift the stick following the 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 etc.. the stick now seems to be able to move anywhere, without the normal left and right restriction when in gear..

I am sure there is a formal taxonomy for these things, but I am way too new for that!!

I videoed it, if that does't make sense!!

So much for me stating on a few small jobs on this new disco,.. I was going to fix a lock, and change a seat.. never wanted to change a bloody gearbox... however.. them's the breaks!! literally..

sounds like the cap holding the gearstick in place is not secure which has allowed the gearstick to pop up out of contact with selector rails.

So, excuse the newbie question.. does that mean i need to take the whole gearbox out?? and start studying the haynes manual?? or can it be resolved from inside the cab??

try to get to base of gearstick through the cab floor, under carpets or mats, you haven't said what model.

Sorry.. its a disco..

I can see the base of the stick, goes into the top of a unit, which looks like a ball at the bottom?? not sure of the correct names..
