Just bought a P38 4.0L V8. Never thought it break any speed records lol, but it seems to be lacking mid range power. Is great of the mark and normal driving, but low speed up long steep Cornish hills it just lacks power…. even on kick down and in sports mode. It already had the middle box bypassed and I’m wondering if that could be the reason. Done a service today inc filters, oil and new plugs, but it’s still the same and bit more gutless than I would expect.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated…. Lee

You would be better posting this in the P38 section.
I will ask @blue beasty our friendly post shifter, to shift it for you.
 
Camshafts are well known for wearing, if valves aren't opening fully then you'll be down on power
 
Depends on which 4.0 the Thor or Gems.

The latter is gutless even when in pucker health, the former was much better..

No substitute of displacement the 4.6 is the best of the bunch in terms of power, unless you find a 630r ;)
