It's not broken!
Donater
My Defender 90, 1985, needs two new door latches, lift-up handle type. None of the usual parts stockests can get hold of them - can anyone suggest where I might get them, or will I need to replace the doors. Photos attached (I hope).

What a total shag

Had a trawl for you, and yes (part MUC6979) appears to be no longer in production.

Think that leaves you trawling ebay, breakers yards etc.

They sometimes come up on ThePart.com - but can be expensive

What is actually wrong with them? Believe at one time a spring kit is avaialble if that's what's broken

I doubt very much if you will have to replace the doors, Have you tried the usual spares suppliers, Buckley bros, lrspares, paddocks, craddocks, look in a land rover mag.

Thanks for your help, I have tried most of the main suppliers but will also try the others mentioned.

Not sure what's wrong, I have replaced the lock cylinder but the mechanism doesn't lock, even though the new cylinder pins lift.

I will try a thorough degrease, and as a last resort drill out the rivets and dismantle the thing, but don't really want to do this if there are no replacements available.

Simpler to leave the beast unlocked, with nothing stealable inside.

Paddocks have these parts:
Part Number 395038 - Door Handle LH - Anti Burst
Part Number 395037 - Door Handle - RH Anti Burst & Defender Rear Safari Door

I have order these for my Series 3 doors but I am not 100% sure on the pin but it looks similar to the ones you have?

Thanks ZV Defender. This looks so similar that it's worth a punt. I'll let the forum know if it works.

Cheers.

When you removed the lock did you take care not to loose the to ball bearings that should stay in the mech when you pulled the barrel? If they have gone walkabouts it wont lock anymore....

4x4 Tom, I think you have answered the problem. I got the 90 just recently, and knew the door locks weren't working. When I stripped them there were no ball bearings, but I did not know enough to look for them!

Thanks, now I just have to find a new set of balls.....:D

When I got mine the ball bearings were missing, If you find any can you post up where you found them please. I've looked for ages and found none.

Dave

I had an old bearing that i bust open and they happened to be the correct size, give me a pm if you have trouble finding them.

My local locksmith has sorted out my missing balls (!) and the required diameter, for future reference, is 4.75mm.

i went to paddocks the other week for a set of barrels for these lock and when i fitted lost a bearing not noing about it, when id worked it out i ****ed about for ages id cut end of a 3/16 rivet and kept fileing abit off untill it work right.

Dragging an old thread up, does anyone have any idea how these barrels come out?

No hole to depress the pin as that part is housed within the unit itself with no way of gaining access to it without pulling it apart, unless there's another way. I've took the bolt out which sits in line to the rear of the barrel but that hasn't done anything.

I don't have the keys either
