Hello,

Here goes the dumb question of the week: I was in low range first gear and the engagement of the handbrake made the car stall.
Is it possible to have damaged or weakened something due to the big forces involved?

The first answer will win the explanation of how this happened, I bet you'll have a laugh

Thanks

Ok, here it goes:

So this afternoon I finished adjusting the diff lock linkage. I was seated on the passenger seat, organizing the tools in the roll and asked someone to start the engine to warm it up.

I then realized that I forgot the car in gear, 1st low range. I couldn't reach the keys (LHD) and the stick wouldn't jump out of gear, this while the car was driving its way into the busy street out of my driveway...by itself

Only solution was to pull the handbrake. First the front wheels slipped and then it stalled. I went for a little drive outside and everything felt normal

Takes a decent guy to confess to that, but I'm sure most of us have done silly things

On tickover would be very unlucky if you'd caused any damage

Oh and my silly, removing rear prop without putting in difflock on a slight slope towards a pond

The really stupid thing is I'm usually quite careful in terms of chocking the wheels

Having dragged myself out before the rear wheels ran me over, had to jump in cab and hit the foot brake - stopped about 2 ft from edge of pond. Was definately a brown trousers moment:eek:

Hahahaha, im getting great entertainment out of these confessions :D i think a thread on this topic is needed!!

My stupid move:
Off-road, on uneven surface, driving in ruts made by other vehicles ahead (so no need to steer as it will follow the tracks), 1st gear low, at tickover, getting thrown from side to side in the cab, hit the door, latch slipped and the door opened, i fell out, defender kept going without me (slowly)! ... ill never live it down, still being slagged about it by those who were behind me bursting their sides laughing at me sprawled out in the mud :D

Defender110 won with that one

The mods should rename this thread, I bet there are a lot of funny stories like the ones here

My numb nuts moment was similar

Fwd Car in gear (vw golf) back axle on stands to replace the exhaust.

My brother was laying underneath to feel the joint make sure it was good.

Started ignition, car lurched forward and axle stands tilted to the point of almost dropping the car off them.

My brother shot out faster than a greased ****, and white as a sheet.....

Never start the car with anyone under it now. Close lesson learnt.

Yea that's not good mate I seen a car fall off stands after someone started it in gear

We've all had our idiot moments. I nearly put my series through my Dads wall into the living room after getting it in reverse TWICE trying to get the clutch un-stuck.
I nearly broke the gear stick off yanking it out of gear. Stupidly I had no brakes and no way of shutting the engine off without getting out and using the stop valve (perkins). I just bought it and it had sat for a few years.
I managed to stop in two inches from the front room wall.

Funnily enough the clutch came un-stuck after the second attempt whamming it straight into gear. That perkins doesn't stall easy.
