Hi. I am currently in the early stages of planning a trip to Cape Town. I own a 110 CSW that I've 70% prepped for overlanding. Have a rough route planned through
France
Italy (Ferry to Tunis)
Libya
Eygpt (maybe)
Sudan
Ethiopia
Kenya
Tanzania
Zambia
Botswana
Namibia
RSA
Then ship what ever is left of the landie back home.
This is my first vehicle based expo and basically I need as much info/tips/detailed routes as possible and would love to hear from anyone who is planning the same or similar journey. At the moment the plan is to travel alone (I do have friends honest) so if any one is interested in joining me either in their own vehicle or mine for all or part of the journey let me know. I am very flexible on dates/routes

Well it looks like the first half of 2010 is going to be a busy time for many 'overlanders'

You have probably read through many of the posts here about a trip down to beautiful Cape Town, my adopted home country.

Just stay the course, get the Landy as good as she could be, roof tent, water tank/ extra fuel tank, and all that stuff :)

I know we LC owners always have a laugh, and give you guy's a tough time, but it's all for fun.
We don't mean it :D

Out on the trip, it's all one big happy group, and every one helps every one with whatever needs doing.
No one gets left behind,
(I could tell you about the old LC which pulled the LR and trailer 400km through the scorching desert to Kahrtom) but I wont :D

The more the merrier :)
If our plans work out, which, touch wood, they are at the moment, then we are also in the for the 'big run to the sun'
We don't have a time for leaving, (but the LC is always ready anyway:D)

Because, to coin a phrase, I have a 'Shiny Slitty', yes, you know who you are:D
I may take the cheaper route down the West coast, Atlantic route.

I am sure, you may have read about 'carnet costs' for Egypt.
Let's just say them thieving Egyption officials, will want to see a policy to cover the the trip while you drive through their sandy barren waste land.
the policy will need to cover 8 x the value of your vehicle.

that buys an awfull lot of fuel.
This is what puts off 'Shiny Slitty' from going Egypt's way.

I too am planning to go almost the same route at almost the same time in almost the same vehicle.
Interested to hear why and how you plan to do Tunisia and Libya.

i should be leaving on an overland expedition in late january - doing a loop crossing over in angola zambia - going anticlockwise. got the gps coordinates set up if you would like to have a ganders

Thanks for the post. As far as I am aware getting into Tunisia is very straightforward.(Ferry from Italy) Land rover owner international(August edition) has a good article on it. Libya, as you are probably aware, is a different story. I have been informed that travellers in groups of less than four have to have a local escort . I am planning on hiring a guide (approx 150 euros a day) travelling along the coast road as quickly as possible(4 days ) to cut costs.
If you were looking at doing the same route it could be an option to team up to reduce costs.
I live near Gatwick. If your anywhere near me we could hook up for a few beers and a chat.

Hey Carpy, why you doing a loop ? If you are going as far as Angola you might as well go all the way, Namibia is a pretty unique place, some cool stuff in SA and Mozambique too.

Plus I can organice free accomodation in Cape Town.

We should catch up for a beer, as I have actually got off my ass and started getting the Landy ready.

Have people on this forum being biving you grief :confused: let me know who they are, and I'll sort them out chop chop !!

Because the book on my 90 is only 1.5k, I can afford to actually drive to Egypt, and then drive right over a Pyramid, squishing a customs official on the way out, I will however be envious of your air conditioned comfort, while I am sweating my ass off :D

west coast all the way. Its got to be the only "adventerous" route left in Africa :) loads of hassle, mud and **** :D

I guess the propper way to do it would be to drive down the West Coast, and head back up the East Coast. The East Coast does have nice beaches and a warm ocean to swim in (and no shark nets) That's adventurous :D

And the lots of mud and **** makes we want a winch even more than I aready did :D

going right down to south africa and back up is a possibility - but it adds a good 1500 miles to the trip - all expenses i guess!

oioi booger - fancy coming with us ;)

and spot on for the beer - cept i am once more without a mode of transport. i would call for a bbq at my place but i think that will have to wait till mid august! if you are ever driving M40 way give me a shout and come round we got some bloody good pubs here!
 
I definately fancy coming along, I'm working on a plan to take a year off, I'll see what happens :)

Is the series not road worthy then ?

Do what pintsize did, buy a 100 squid car for running around in :D
 
i am kind of in an odd position. i love the series to bits - but the main reason for buying was because it was so dirt cheap - there is a big possibility of a half decent profit on it. that being the case it makes more sense to sell it and put that cash towards some kit for the 110 - and then stay on the look out for another bargain! ive worked out for the kit i want from brownchurch alone (heavy duty extended roof rack with supporting struts, swingaway wheel carrier, front bush bar, rear havy duty access ladder and a pair of sand ladders) will be 800 quid. thats before possibly getting a winch and winch bumper, and the various smaller external accessories. and thats before sorting the inside! makes sense to sell the thing to be honest! means i can get the cash together for its respray also!

in all seriousness though it would be great for you to come along. if you do then im sure we can do the extra few miles to south africa if you like! 3 vehicles is safer than 2 also!

Why not make your own or get a local fabricators to make one for you? It'll be as good as Brownchurch's and 1/4 of the price.
