Fitting a new prop takes 30 mins max and I am a serious amateur! New prop including VAT are circa 100 quid I think.

Chatted to my local garage the other day about parts. He said he can't wait around for days for parts to be delivered as most of his customers wouldn't like that. He has an account with the local landrover dealer and that they'll deliver stuff within hours or next day. They have the genuine stuff or a cheaper line for most parts and he barely makes anything on the parts alone.

Just saying.

take it somewhere else - or find out prices for parts and tell him to match the price or you will take your business elsewhere.

Nah he's good. I should have also added you can take your own parts and he'll fit them; which seems fair to me.

I bought a brand new front prop (albeit for a disco) for 60 quid. Not britpart but not genuine. Think it was allmakes. Undo 4 9/16 nuts at either end and the front prop pretty much falls off. Easy

It's not difficult to change a uj.
Basic tools, - jack, hammer, vice, socket set, circlip pliers & a grease gun.
Keep it regualry greased.

Finally!

They have found the reason for me losing coolant. A hose rubbing on the chassis. It's getting replaced for the car to be ready Tuesday. Hose is located deep in engine bay. Just glad to no longer be supporting Halfrauds with a 5ltr purchase of coolant every month.

You're going to be paying £400 quid for something that recently cost me _£10_, yes, literally ten pounds.. Obviously, I happen to have a vice and lump hammers and all the associated stuff which you want for changing a prop UJ, but still. Buying a whole prop shaft, and undoing the 8 bolts and doing them up again would have been a bit more than a tenner, but still wouldn't have cost £400.

I would recommend getting handy with the spanners, as this job would have been dead simple. If you don't have the time nor inclination to do that, then I guess you just have to accept that it's going to cost a hell of a lot to own a landy :( - a lot of people do..

How much for a prop? Ask them just to change the uj's instead. Cost me 45 quid for my local landy independent to supply and fit both uj's to the front prop when I had the same noise.
Fwiw, driving with that clunk causes no damage to anything else.

Until it lets go! Then things get a tad expensive.

Update!

So. Over a week on... Still no car :(

Found a crack in a pipe leading into the radiator so the whole unit is being replaced today. Fingers crossed I will be collecting it tonight.

Note to self - Become handy with a spanner.
