Had my first defender 90 for a few months now and am looking into some off road tyres. i cant decide what to have and how to go about it. thinking of buying some steels for the new tyres then being able to just change the st of wheels on mi landy if and when i want as i do quite a bit of road driving. wanting to know if this is a good idea or if any of you do this? and what tyres to get. i do more green laning than serious off roading.
 
I would personally say DON'T buy AT's. There are many good MT's out there that will ride on the road as well as many aggressive AT's but be vastly superior off it.

If it's a 2nd set, then I'd look at something like some Insa Sahara's/Kingpin Amazon's or the Fedima's in the same tread pattern. They are fairly ok on road and brilliant off it. Being a remould they are good value too.


If you want non remould then look at Kumho KL71's, SST's or BFG MT's.

If you want to spend a bit, no a lot more look at Simex's, Interco or similar.


As for sizes...

Don't bother with anything any smaller than a 235/85R16. Nice direct fit tyre.

Or if you want bigger:

265/75R16
31.10.50R15
285/75R16
33.11.50R15
33.12.50R15
35.10.50R16

Some might require a lift and/or trimming and the bigger you get the prone to breaking drivetrain parts.
 
Bigger tyres are more likely to be classed as a modification and therefore more expensive with insurance too. Just keep it simple, a set of road 235/85 and a set of off road 235/85. How aggressive you go in choice of tread depends on how often you want to get stuck or how much road noise you are prepared to put up with :D

Have a look at the John Craddock website, They do some really good tyre and rim packages.

Steels are fine for general use or second set of off road/winter tyres,and if you ding one its easy to repair. If you have to replace one its not anywhere as much as an aloy.

Steel rims can be good value and many places sell tyre/rim packages. So make sure you budget how much fitting and balancing would be if you don't buy rims.
 
MAXXIS BUCKSHOT M/T's (235-85)are good value,just got 4 fitted for £400.Don't know if you care or not but the're not remoulds either...

makes me laugh that does, from what ive seen of em there no better than average off road, to the point of my mate gettin stuck on a grass verge after pulling in to let a car pass
