I need to get a more aggressive tyre, BFG's aren't cutting it at the moment and I ended up stuck lots getting into and out of fields at the weekend.

I am happy to fit these on spare rims and accept 100 percent off road as a limitation.

What are the options ?

Defender 110 CSW.... I can make changes if need be but I assume I can get a fairly aggressive tyre without too much faffing around ? (bump stops will be fine)

I reckon any 4x4 with sensible tyres and both diffs locked would be a real weapon, obviously when you then get stuck its proper stuck!
 
Special tracks for just mud, but they are pants in sand they just dig.

ok on road noisy but they go round corners and do kind of stop even when its a bit wet.
 
Look up JCS 4X4 tyres on the bay and email Charles he will sort you out carries good stock and next day delivery
 
I run 235 85 16" Malatesta Kaimans .. and rarely get stuck due to traction, mostly through bottoming out in deep ruts or driving a bad line.

You are absolutely right! :) Ninety with axle lockers, centre diff locked, reasonablt aggresive tread. Hard to improve on this side of a 4wd tractor.

Special tracks for just mud, but they are pants in sand they just dig.

For mostly off road I do reckon Special Tracks would be good. Or check out the Fedima range, I like my Maximas.

I assume wider 285 would be better.

Havent seen wider is better generally, except maybe in some types of competition?

Have not been set since i had them... 2 years ago..

Noisy on the road but do perform ok, braking and grip etc
 
Thanks folks, Its good to know.. If I go into a muddy field now "un chewed up" I wont get out.

So 265 75is wider and more aggressive than 235/85 I cant see anywhere where they do them with wheels built in as I wouldn't have them on all the time.

235/85 is 235 mm wide and a side wall height of 85% of the tread width (199.75 mm) whilst 265/75 is 265 mm wide with a side wall height of 75% of tread width (198.75 mm)

therefore the 265 is wider but not quite as tall by 1mm, its horses for courses, I like the 235 with offset rims others prefer more width less offset. It is an age old argument that never really gets to a definitive answer, go with what you can get for the right price and your gut feeling.

Sold... I can always knock the pressure right down to 12 or so and get more than that width anyway.

Special Tracks - I keep thinking of doing these as a cheap option that are of course great off road - but I see a lot of them looking cracked, chunks missing, etc, which puts me off. Are they remotely suitable for a green laning vehicle that of course picks up fair road miles going back and forth between off road/on road areas? How many thousand miles are they likely to survive before early perishing?

I have done about 25k on mine with a 20/80 split between off and on road use , yes they have chunks missing on the outer lugs but that is mainly my fault for not sorting the camel cut or the arches out sooner, no splits in them and they are 3 years old, out here (poland) we have extremes of temp that should sort the boys from the men in so much as can be -35 in winter and +40 in the summer and they have endured it all.

for what they cost i really do think you get a cracking off road tyre that will survive on road for as long as they do off, i have lost maybe 7 mm in tread depth in that time but aprox 30% of my hearing, be aware the noise is like being chased by a couple of WW2 fighters at 30mph +
