i currently have tyre size 235/70/r16 on steel rims could i stick a larger tyre on this rim and what would be the recomended size to replace them with. thanks
 
think by the sound of it he is after a larger sidewall not width. did you not have to use stops with a 265 on bad lad?
 
Raz I got same size on my Disco, and yes you do need to adjust the stops to eliminate them catching the radius arms.

Also changed front and rear springs to get them out of the wheel arch as they are taller aswell as wider.
 
The second figure "70" is the profile size.. It means the profile is 70% of the width.

This is why the 235/70 are not as tall as the 265/70.

Read it in LRO Monthly!

And it is certainly the case with my BFG All Terrains.
 
thanks for the info guys the 265/70/r16 is the one i was looking at, is the adjustment stops easy to fit, thanks
 
they are already there, they are bolts (19mm head, I think) on the front of the tracta housing, get someone to turn the steering and you will notice the bolt head contacting the axle flange, just screw this bolt out until the tyre on the oposite wheel doesn't touch the radius arm!

Hey presto!

Just remember that this will reduce your turning circle though.

they are at the 3 0'clock or 9 o'clock position depending on how you are looking at it.

i have 265.75/r16 AT (not very deep tread) on my disco with a 30mm lift and they catch the arches(fine for on road stuff). also some other guys wth discos(dont know if they were lifted) were catching arches with 235.85/r16.
 
see am getting cloway 325/85/16"s at cost price so am looking at fitting these but yes i do only run the standard springs.
 
am after the arche extentions anyway so taking a grinder to it dont really bother me but as long as i know to leave them off till i have the arches then thats sound cheers mate.
 
The offset of the wheel rim matters too, ie standard LR steel or alloys don't throw the tyre out from the hub as much as eg white 8 spokes or modulars. The former may lead to reduced turning circle and the latter to catching the arches on over-sized tyres.

In a dilemma myself.
