It has come time to change tyres. I was determined to choose General Grabber At in 255/55 R18 form. Due to many positive recommendations.

But recently I have been told that I should consider fitting BFGoodrich ´s 265/65 R18 since they are more comfortable and strong when leaving tarmac and would probably fit in without any mods (I do have a steel front bumper wich gives marginal clearance).

I am wondering if they fit in the stock Disco II (2001), or if they will handle as well as GGAT´s on road.

Has any of you any experience on 265/65 R 18 tyres, or could say something like Yes, do it ! or forget it! ?

That will be a big tyre for a standard D2.

Whether it will rub or not, I dont know !.

You could go 255/60/18 in the Grabbers with no bother.

I have BFG, but I havnt heard anything bad about the Grabbers.

I have no experience of 265 65 18 tyres. However looking logically 255 55 18 has a total diameter of 73.77mm. 265 65 18 has total dia 80.17nn. I would expect that with this difference in diameter the tyre will under certain circumstances foul the bodywork of the truck - especially when off road.

Apparently 255 55 18 do not give problems and should be better off road than the 255 55's

Personally for rough work I have a second set of 16" wheels with 235 70 Grabber AT2's which I find the ideal tyre for rough road work and off road
 
The thing is that when going off-road, in the region (Pyrinees) there is plenty of rocks, rather than mud (not so rainy). A friend of mine had GG AT2, and he had several punctures due to latteral damage.

This is the reason why he told me to try BF´s since they have much better side protection. :(

But if noboby appears to have had BF´s on 18" with standard disco I will have to either find another brand that goes "a la BF" or go for GG AT2 and assume that I will be simply less "aggressive" than my friend (which might as well be true) since I have worn out very quickly Pirelli Scorpions (totally unsuitable for rocky roads) but not had a puncture with them (almost, but not) ....:rolleyes:

Thank you to both for your thoughts and experience. I cannot afford the logistics of having 2 sets of wheels for one car. I will keep searching or waiting for further comments and decide during this month.
 
265/65-18 is 31.5" approx, will most likely catch the front bumper on turning and the steering stops may need adjusting as well, will be fine if you have a 40mm + lift.

I concour with the "weak" sidewalls af the AT2, hence I went with tyres with a 3 ply sidewall for hopefully more strength.
 
Thank you Urban Panzer, I have been looking arround for alternative wheels and have only found Dunlop Grand Treck AT2 or Toyo Open Country AT that appear to be as off-road biased as GG AT2. But I cannot see any better sidewall protection compared with General Grabber. And Cooper does not offer 255/55 nor 255/60 models.

Your experience is very valuable since your car is extremely similar to mine when stock. And what I wanted to do requires many of the things you did.

I will stay +0 by now, and go this time with Grabbers. Thank you for your input.
 
I .am running in the Andalucian hills on 255/55R18 General Grabbers. Only got them because they were the only all terrains I could get in the size I needed. They are fine. The only issue I have is when on tarmac the road noise is much louder than I expected
 
General Grabber at's have been withdrawn off sale in EU as they have failed the noise test - so if you can find some get them now. We have the problem of supplying another 2 to a customer down here and cannot get them.
 
Well, in that case, a relatively similar tyre could be a Toyo Open Country AT either in 255/55 R18 form, or even in 265/60R18 form which I would assume would fit with 777 mm diameter (since BF Goodrich 245/75 R 16 do fit, and have an almost equal diameter of 773 mm´s)

Has any of you tried Toyo´s AT´s ?

I guess this is European wide. In anycase anytime soon (even if too late for me) General Grabber will come up with an alternative one would expect.
 
General do have another pattern out now which has passed EU noise levels but tread is nowhere near as effective
 
Just in case anyone may be interested or may be usefull, I finally bought AT2 Grabbers in 255/60 R18 form. My car runs on stock air suspension.

As a result the car seats slightly higher than original.

No problems with rubbing or turning circle.

Once I have driven more hours in different conditions (highway, B roads, snow, rain, mud, rocks) I will report any significant differences in relation to previous Scorpions.

So far very happy with the decision.
