I have been running my 90 on 265/75s since i bought it, and to be honest, while they looked macho, they were bloody dangerous on country roads where the camber was severe towards the edge, causing you to fight the thing to keep it straight, and even worse if the kerb was flooded, pulling the vehicle heavily to one side, and almost out of control.
I have just fitted 235/85s, and the differnce was amazing, same make of tyre, just narrower.
It may not look as beefy as it did, but its a damn site safer. ;)

The narrower tyres should be better in the wet, snow, ice and off road in mud. Wide is not always best.

It does depend on the surface, but i would say a narrower one, this will "cut" down deeper rather than float around on the top. If the surface was rocky or loose dry dirt, you might be better off with wider ones.

NB; ooh look 200 posts, do i get a free all expenses paid holiday for me and my vehicle and family to iceland for 6 months.!!!!!!!

so which tire is best off road? a narrow one or a wide one?
wide tyres are rarely best choice on a 4x4's, as yer man says thin ones get throught the top crap and can then get some grip on the sub surface. wide ones just sit on top and spin, if you are on rocky ground a wide tyre has more area with which to find sharp stones and therefore punctures. so all in, narrow are yer best bet.
if yer in iceland and fancy that 'drive yer jeep over the water' stuff then wide would be best

yer probably wouldn't go even if yer did,or you would say yer would then bottle it with some lame excuse, pretty much like the french trip ;)

i can relate to your 265's pigpen. mine came with 265 grizzly claws and my landy is all over the place on country roads (scares the girlfriend) i just thought it was normal for a land rover and my non power assisted sloppy steering :D

if they EVER wear out, i will probably down size to 235/75's even though my machine wouldnt look as good :(
