I have 255/55R18's on

But I've read elsewhere that 16" were the standard and that 18 was only used on the 4.6 HSE vogue. But it was a US site and they don't seem to ever mention diesels.

When I do need new tyres, is there a massive price difference between 18 and 16" tyres? I gather that for off-roading the smaller ones are better but that the 18's are better on road?

Still learning, so sorry for the questions :)

Given the costs of buying 16" wheels to wrap in cheaper rubber, you're probably not saving any money. I'm currently wrapped in £95 a corner Kuhmo tyres. I think there was something like £2 extra per corner for 18". Given a decent set of 16" wheels are around £120. You'd need to go through 15 sets of tyres to start saving money.

Unless you already have the 16s, don't change wheel size to try and save money.

Thanks, that'll do. I'll stick with what I have. Cheers for the advice...

My brother's RR has the 16". Softer ride as the higher profile absorbs some of the bumps. However, I reckon the handling is definitely better on mine with the 18".

Compared to a classic on original springs or a L322 the P38 isn't exactly comfy over the bumps, bearable on 16" wheels but IMHO too hard on 18" wheels.

That's interesting, I've always felt the ride in my P38 on Arnott GenII's is much more supple than my mates L322. The seats are Germanic hard in his L322 as well:confused:

Did he have bling wheels? I've only driven two L322s - both were on the standard (19s?) both rode much nicer than any P38 I've ever driven - especially over sharp bumps or ridges. Perhaps your fancy airbags make all the difference?

My '99 DSE had 18" as standard - the P38 is a bit funny on 18's doesn't really suit them unless the psi is spot on and the tyres are the same brand and wear....anything outside this leads to odd handling....

My 2 previous 4.6's were 16's and drove so much better than the DSE on 18's IMHO

My Vogue is on 20's (were on when I bought it). And have been looking for either 18's or 16's for it. Not really sure which way to go? Thinking 16's for comfort, but I was also thinking about the tyre costs. If there is very little difference, I would be considering 18's.

got mine on 20's as well, ride is like sitting on a go kart. just bought a nice set of 16's from fleebay for £100 with 4 good tyres. got the 4 wheels for less than the price of 1 tyre for my 20's.
i'll be using the 16's for winter, then swapping to the 20's for summer. must admit, the 20's do look nice on a P38. going to have them revamped in black chrome :D:D:D

and no i'm not a drug dealer LOL :D:D:D::D:D

BUT!
got a friend here who sells tyres, also a member of the forum, contact him if you need anything, i'm sure he will be willing to help.

The L322 has standard wheels, could be the shocks I guess, seats are still hard though.
My P38 rides on 18" Hurricanes with Goodyear Wranglers but I run the rears at 28psi unless loaded.:)
