Please would someone give me a definitive steer on front and rear tyre pressure? I've currently got 34/48 psi. It returned from LR with 28/36 which seemed too squashy, no load -only small peeps. Advice seems to be ranging from 28/48 to what I currently have. Is it just trial and error (and comfort) depending on your load change? If it's as low as 28 in the front, would I wear tyres quicker?

Thanks in advance

.....sorry  defender 110 (2.2)

Not sure there is a definiive -just different views and the odd mention of the good old chalk test!

For what it's worth run my 90 (unloaded) 28 at front and 32 at rear

So maybe LR were right to adjust them? When I asked they then hesitated about correct pressures, hence my post?

My other truck (not that I usually refer to the landy using the 'T' word) - a long wheel base Mitsi is 30 all round unloaded.

Don't know why I shared that, beyond it reinforcing my own view that you don't need high rear tyre pressures unless heavily loaded

Think logically I'd expect the rear tyres on a 110 to be slightly higher than on a 90 so the numbers you posted (28/36) didn't strike me as crazy

I tried my 110 TD5 CSW at the LR recommended pressures (36/48) and the ride was rock hard.

I reduced them to F30 R36 and it's a lot better. I never carry heavy loads in it.

Think I've got same size tyres as you and I put mine up from 28F 38R, which seemed far too soft, to 32F 45R. Drive and handling is far far better. I don't normally carry any heavy loads, this is on a 110 with an HD chassis.

Thanks for this. Yes, I found I didn't like the handling with 28 on the front. I might play around a bit and find what fits? I'm driving only on tarmac at the moment with no load. Slightly softer than 34/48 then, I'll give this a go.

Thanks All :)

You should be able to get the tyre pressures from the owners handbook. Also on a label on one of the door pillars. On tarmac , under-pressure will increase the contact patch and hence tyre wear. Over pressure will also increase tyre wear, central part will wear quicker than the outer edges. Correct tyre pressures will give max tyre life and aid fuel consumption.

Yes of course you're right. The manual refers to the door pillar plate and the plate suggests 28/48 unloaded. This just felt a little unbalanced, and it handles better with a higher psi on the front. I just feel a bit bemused at the variation, it seems like an individual thing. I thought too that LR would give a firmer recommendation? Everyone I spoke to at LR seemed divided on opinion, then I was given a handout that suggested 33 all round; in brackets was written (90 TD5)?!

That's what the military 110s have the tyre pressures at, 28F 48R. I just think it's far too soft at the front and you can feel the difference

Thanks the_wolf, I've reset at 32/45 and will see how I go.

I someone wants to write up a decent description and then reports it to flag it up I'll stick it

The Mad Hat Man did a very straight forward description on a thread entitled 'Tyre Pressures' on 20th October 2012 at the Top of page 2. I thank him for it. The most difficult part of the test is finding a piece of chalk!
