Still looking for a Disco 2 (manual, leather, preferably dark colour in good condition), but many of them seem to have issues of one sort or another.

Out of interest what's your typical repair/maintenance budget for your Disco 2, and/or if you do a lot of work yourself how much time does it consume?

The first thing to take account of is that any Disco 2 is at least 13 years old now and any vehicle of that age is going to have "issues".
Even if you're lucky enough to get a superb example, you should budget about a grand on top, especially if you're going to set yourself up with diagnostics kit too. You'll probably need to do a full service including oil changes in not only the engine but the gearbox, T-box and axles, plus all the filters. I change the engine oil annually and the rest every two years. The engine will swallow almost two gallons of oil. I normally let my garage do that at the same time as the MoT, so I'm looking at about 300 quid for the lot.
New tyres for a Disco will probably run out at around 85 to 120 quid a corner depending on the make and potential sales offers. It's almost essential that you replace the tyres one each axle together and recommended that you really replace the full set of four rather than one at a time.
Like any other older vehicle there will be "unforeseen circumstances" which will need to be addressed at the time.
Parts for the Disco are relatively cheap, especially if you shop around, there are plenty of good and some not so good suppliers on the internet. For instance, when I had the discs and pads replaced, I provided them to the garage for them to fit and I paid near enough a hundred quid for the full kit.

I understand older vehicles can often have issues, my daily drive is a 2003 VW t4 with 170k on the clock and the 2nd/weekend car is a '94 MX5, but I was wanting to get a feel for frequency/scale of expenditure on Disco 2s. This would replace the MX5 as a 2nd car (with the girlfriend and myself having other vehicles for daily duties), mainly for boat towing, holidays, weekends, dog transport and a bit of winter use when it snows on the Yorkshire Moors.

I agree about having a bit of slush fund with regards buying a secondhand vehicle, a very good point, the figures for servicing/tyres above is a useful start. I was wondering on average what typical additional expenditures beyond normal consumables average out at, is it typically hundreds or thousands a year...?
 
It all depends whether you carry out the work yourself or pay a garage/mate etc
Also common to need replacing at some point will be pas pipes which are over 100,watts linkage-180(only use genuine-trust me)
Wheel bearings/abs sensors
With regards to how much per annum is quite hard to say,it all depends on the vehicle/history/use/maintenance (or lack of)
It's a lot cheaper to carry out the work yourself,I do everything on mine except the mot.No way could I afford to run it otherwise
 
I do all the work on mine and try not to think about the cost. Running an older car isn't always a cheap alternative, I do it because it's more than a means of transport. Luckily, my wife doesn't object just says if it means a part then so be it.

Agree, it's there to be used, so I don't want to come out and find it won't start one morning, or find a tyre near the limit.

If you buy one, spend money sorting it out, don't wait for things to go bad, change all the oils, sort out leaking sunroofs if fitted, check belts etc etc.

Pre-emptive maintenance is far better than waiting for things to go pop.

The service schedule is available on line or in the rave manual if you wanted to know what you could be expected to do depending on mileage.

Unfortunately I think your original question is dependent on what you source and ow good it is to start with, but as all ready mentioned diagnotics is worth geting , but expect to pay in the region of £300.

Oh and as I found this week, make sure you have RAC or similar cover.

I keep three cars running. Standard service items I buy regularly through the year knowing they'll be used when required and you can often spot offers and save a few quid. It helps spread the cost and I'm not caught out at service time finding I'm short on something.
 
I keep a very close eye on costs. Since I bought mine (2001 ES Td5 auto) in 2009 the average annual cost for repairs / maintenance / parts - some done by me, others by a local independent, have been just under £1,500. That's doing a service every year (about 8,000 miles) and a major one every 2. I bought the Disco with 100,000 miles and it's now done just under 160,000.

The maximum cost was £2,600 for 2014 when I had a number of problems.
