Turbo coming with UPS tomorrow, apparently.

Have taken off all pipe work and soaked the nuts in WD as they appear to be welded on! Had a good look inside and the impeller appears to have some damaged vanes. No wonder the thing was rattling like hell. Also loads of play in the shaft......

Will pop back to garage this evening to try again to get the nuts off and remove the old unit. Other problem is that the bolt securing the heat shield to the turbo has been rounded off by some helpful individual so may end up popping the bracket off and having to rely on the two mounted on the head at least until I get home. At least being ally it bends to give access!

Thank God I had my socket set in the car and there is a good hard wear shop near the garage for a new set of ring spanners.

Good luck with the nuts, if they come free it should be plain sailing. Is there anyone there you could borrow a blowtorch off in case they need a little persuation?

Nope. That would be another trip to the hard wear shop! Hoping that WD, time and some sort of fashioned extender bar will do it.

Update.....

Turbo is now off although the nuts needed a lot of persuasion! The lower one on the manifold was a total b**ch to get off. Ended up with a ring spanner facing the bulkhead, webbing strap wrapped round it, lying under the car, foot against the axle, pulling like he'll before it shifted. Worked in the end!

Now just await the arrival of shiny new one, hour to bolt it all back on, gently test run it and then hammer down to Spain! Or maybe not hammer down.....

Pleeeeeeeeze don't hammer down to Spain:jaw:

Done some reading on this, and most suggest that letting the engine gently idle at start up for a few mins is best. Once pressure light goes out oil should have circulated, but I am in no hurry to trash £550 worth of metal!

Parts on van heading to me, according to UPS tracker. Feel like Santa is coming! Also aware, though, of Murphy's Law hovering in background.......

So matey, has it arrived yet? Did you sample the delights of local nosh & hooch last night? Have you had a chance to try some Rocquefort cheese? It's made just up the road from where you beached.

Hope all is well,

Dave

Arrived, fitted, running. Clearly has some oil in the system as it had been idling nicely for about three mins on start up then revs raced up. I turned it off pronto with clouds of smoke, left it for ten mins and checked with the mechanic in the garage where it has been. Apparently it is normal to get some oil in the system when the turbo lets go and he said ( in broken Franglais!) that it will clear.

It is still smoking a bit but running normally. I will stop after 20 mins and check the smoke has cleared.

Fingers crossed I will be in Spain for a beer tonight!

Cheers,
Martin

well done and good luck.;):D

After some initial nerves the car ran the 400km down to Spain and then sat for a week before being loaded up for the 940 mile trip back to Suffolk. Ran like clockwork on return journey!

It is now a happier beast with a brand new turbo, although I am now waiting for the next problem...... Ever the optimist!

Hurrah !!!!!!

A turbo primes every time you turn the engine on, the oil return pipe is like a drain pipe, oil just pours out! Nothing much stays in the labyrinth bearing when there is no oil pressure, which is why you can detect some play in the shaft when they are not pressurised with oil.
