Hi everyone. Just took delivery of my new (and first) Discovery. I asked the dealer this question but he didn't know the answer, and I cannot find it in the manual; given that the engine is a turbo-diesel, should I be allowing the engine to idle for a while before switching off in order to let the turbo cool?
Many thanks for any assistance/advice.

yes idle for about 20-30 seconds after start up and before switch off. This will help with premature turbo failure, so will regular oil changes.

If you do any heavy towing, some dark night stop the car just after a hard climb (keep the engine running) and jump out quicly and open the bonnet ..... the exhaust turbine casing may be visibly RED HOT.

That hot.

You want it to cool down enough that the heat will not carbonise oil on the turbine shaft. Some turbos have a water cooling arrangement to help this problem.
