While giving my 2004 TD4 a service earlier, I noticed this...

It's done 175k, has been serviced regularly and is running well. So, is it a sign it's about to expire. It looks awkward to get at and probably beyond what I want to tackle myself, so guess it will be quite expensive to sort considering the relatively low value of the FL itself…?

Image not showing.

We had a slight oil leak noticed at mot, six months later, we had the brake calliper replaced, mechanic noticed said leak, traced it to the Turbo, we replaced it, the blades where thick with oil. I think we bought the part, he fitted it. Better than having a run a way and we were going away with 3 generations in car.

I fixed the price, but it was a bigger job than he thought, but then again @WD50 loves her FL1.

Edit: The leak has gone.

I always struggle to get the images from photobucket into the posts/threads when using the iPad…

Thank you for the reply. So, in a nutshell it'll need a new turbo before long then.

Do you mind me asking how much it all was?

From the location of the turbo I guess it's quite labour intensive to replace.
I've certainly done more stuff on the FL myself than any other vehicle I've owned, but to be fair to it, I have owned it longer than other cars I've had.
There is part of me that would have a go at replacing the turbo, as I have ramps and a fairly comprehensive toolkit.
I suppose I'm asking, is have any of you tackled it…?

The turbo is a couple of hours work on a 2 post lift. A recon turbo + labour is under the value of the car and you definitely couldn't replace the Freelander for the cost of doing the work.

Hi all
Yes he's right 2 hours off 2 hours on total of 4 hours so average garage charge £45+VAT
£180+VAT Recon turbo off eBay £285 +VAT
£495+VAT !
I'm in the process of replacing my turbo after it failed with loads of smoke and a high revving engine! Ok it's a time consuming job but not that difficult. Just need to go through things logically. Hardest bit for me is getting the torux bolts out from under the air filter and getting the oil out of my hair! I'm doing it with the front up on car ramps.
There is a thread on here giving you the steps to do it. I used it as a reference
Don't forget to do a full oil change and filter change. My td4 has done 180000 miles and a modified oil breath filter so mine went because of old age!
Any one need more information contact me!
