I believe I am about to have a turbo fail but just wanted to confirm.

Two main symptoms are:

- Blue smoke from the exhaust, way worse when cold or when it has sat for a while, however does return intermittently when warm.

- The start of what is a high pitched whining sound from the engine upon acceleration. Again this is more noticeable when cold but is still present after running for a while.

The reason I am unsure is that there doesn't seem to be any loss of power (maybe it has happened over a little period of time and I just haven't noticed) MPG is also down about 3-4 mpg but again unsure as it's winter and could just be that.

There are no engine codes, I did have a MAF code, cleared it 2 weeks back and it hasn't returned.

I suppose my question is, could this be anything other than a failing turbo?

Thanks

I dont know the engine, but have you taken off an intercooler hose to see if any oil present?

There's a bit but nothing I am instantly worried about. I had an issue last year with oil in an intercooler hose, found a split, replaced the hose and it has seemed fine since. I have checked the hoses now, all seem ok.

Theres a mod on the 3.0l turbo oil return pipes, basically oil pipe dont drain fully and when you gun it oil gets into the intake with the resultant smoke you are having
So get googling

I've come across this and will happily do the mod but would this cause the sound as well? If it may cause the sound, I'll give it a go because the last thing I want to do is have to take the body off.

Following on from this, the smoke happens at low revs and this fix is for the second turbo, which kicks in at 2800, I am uncertain this addresses the issue?
