OK so I have a feeling this is going to be very quick or an absolute nightmare!

I went over to my French mechanics today for a chat and in the conversation he dropped in this little one to see if I could help him.

He has been given the internals to a turbo (taken apart by owner who has now lost all but what is in the picture) that has come of a D1 and he has been asked if he can find the bits to rebuild it, as the owner has lost them and then put it back on the D1 which he hasn't seen yet. Simples.

whats left of turbo.jpg
picture of what he has been given by the owner.

Vin number is SALLJGMF8TA5***** taken from V5.

I have searched and it appears that the vehicle is a 1996 D1 which could have a 300tdi lump.

Questions are:-
Can anyone tell me from the vin which engine the car has? and/or (know it's a long shot) ID the turbo from the picture? How many makes of turbo were fitted to the 300tdi so we, sorry he, can source a replacement?

French factor you just have to love it, how can you lose 90% of a turbo.

it is a t25 cartridge (bit you have in picture) with a t25 coolside, and a landrover own hot side. Part number ERR4893

yep, basically its the exhaust side with the built in manifold which is unique to land rover.
the cool-side could be off anything with a t25 turbo.

On a well known auction site now looking for one with all the hoses and oil pipe who will deliver to France.

Many thanks again for the help.

You have me thinking actualy.

When I had a rover 220 coupe turbo 'tomcat', a common mod was to swap out the t25 cold side and cartridge for a t28, which provided more boost at lower charge temps. I wonder if it can be done to the 300tdi turbo to give more power and better econemy. the t28's are plentiful too compared to the t25's.

sorry for the random thinking out loud.... just got me thinking.

Don't be sorry for thinking out loud as what you have said sounds feasible even though it is wasted on me. Think I will still try and find a complete one for a 300tdi.
