Finally got the Turbo out yesterday.
Rave said to remove it from the bottom but there was no space to take it past the sub frame so I removed the drivers side headlight and slipped it out past the Aircon pipes.
The spindle through the middle is still in tacked but plenty of play from side to side so looks like the bearing has just failed. Won't know properly until it's been opened up fully.
+1 and a short warm up from cold also helps.Bearings normally collapse over time this is due to lack of sufficient lubricant reaching the bearings when the engine has been turned off and the turbo is still spinning at 100k. All turbo's fail eventually, but leaving them to idle with the engine running just helps them to live longer.

+1buy cheap buy twice is my motto, just get a recon turbo job done & piece of mind & guarantee, you may have been lucky this time round, next time could give you a leg wobbler of a bill/repair
Appreciate this is not the best time for big purchases...but if when fitting the core it is not alighned or set in place correctly, the damage could be even more costly!....Yeah guess so. Not a great time of year to be spending heaps of cash though.
A little birdie told me you might do tyres Wil2813? Is this correct?

Right it's been sent off now and a recon unit is on it's way back to me.
Of to the stealer tomorrow to get some new gaskets and bolts before I put it all back together again.
