hello
while driving my disco today i heard what sounded like a rattling sound coming from what i thought was the turbo. shortly after that i lost power and the CHECK ENGINE warning light came on and the disco stopped.

turned off the engine and then started the engine while listening to the turbo, can't be sure but i think it a goner.

RAC to the rescue, back home engine will start but pressing the throttle makes no difference to the rpm, engine just idles

can anyone point me in the right direction on what the problem is

many thanks

i doubt its yer turbo as that only boosts yer engine power and yer injun will probably run ok without it , it will be lacking power but should still be drivable

same here, your car would still drive but just be sluggish. have you tried to rev the engine from the trottle body?? not sure if you can get to it on your model as i dont know the engine but i can help eliminate things for you.

hi

tried today and it started but i seen some smoke coming from the engine bay, i had the bonnet up. when i got it started i still could not rev it, all fluid levels ok and there was no water in the oil

will spend more time tomorrow and fault find a bit more, but i am lost

will keep you posted

spoke to a dealer today and as my disco is 1996, hes says the computer system would not have any codes as to why the check engine light was on, no point in plugging it in?

today i checked all the pipes around the turbo, couldn't find any splits, checked all connections and found nothing wrong

had some one else start the engine while i watched, i could see what appeared to be exhaust smoke coming from the rear of the engine, could it be a cylinder head gasket?

also when idling when u listen to the engine run you would swear that the sound near the turbo was like an exhaust with a hole in it? but i could not find any blow out?

will get it into the garage tomorrow now i have finished working on my landy 90

cant figure this out, can anybody help and point me in the right direction..........................many

manifold gasket?
I get a puff off smoke around the turbo area when ah start up from cold, me mate reckons it could be that gasket. Can't quite remember exactly wot he said, but sounded like a thin bit of metal and some asbestosy type stuff make up the gasket and the the asbestosy stuff could have just broke away.
Might also be an idea to check yer bolts holding it on, mine were a wee bit loose so ah just nipped thum up a bit and worry about the gasket later;) :D

Fost thing that went wrong with mine was the exhaust manifold gasket. It makes a phutt phutt phutt noise that increases with engine revs and if you put your hand round the area the noise is coming from you can feel the exhaust gas blowing out.

Grunt
if it is the manifold gasket, then would this stop the engine to rev up?
and the check engine warning light to come on and stay on?

Injun will still rev as normal, and some would probly say performance would be down but in the real world you wunt notice. As for the check engine warning light...........wots one of them then? Unless this light is linked some sort of exhaust sensor I wunt have thought so, but then I'm entering into some sort of nightmare fantasy land when it come to fancy warning lights and injun management systems.
