Hi new to forums, trying to fit an overdrive to LT95 gear box, removed the back plate, split ring & main drive gear, try to fit the overdrive replacement gear & it won't fit, neither will the original one fit back, appear that the main shaft can float & has moved forward by about 2-3mm, so i can't get the split ring on, tried everything i can think of the move it back, now taken the top of the gear box off to look for inspiration & now it don't appear to go into first gear, think this may be related. Im totally stuck anyone got any ideas ?

jamesmartin is your man when it comes to gearboxes

He normally finds these and replies quickly

Welcome by the way

mainshaft is easy sliding fit and will move forward ,each gear has a needle roller thrust bearing with thrust washer each side ,between rear m/s bearing and first gear are two thrust washers and needle bearing the shaft steps down where it enters rear m/s bearing and one thrust washer and the needle bearing sit on thicker part with rear most washer sitting on stepped down part ,when shaft moves forward needle bearing and forwardmost thrust washer drop down onto steeped down part not allowing shaft to go back again with out removing shaft far enough forward to stick thrust washer and needle bearing to first gear with vaseline etc quite a tricky job and impossible with box in vehicle

thanks for info, how can i move the shaft forward to repostion thrust washers ?

is there no way of doing it the car, not sure if i'm up the removing the gearbox !

if they have dropped ,very difficult,as first gear is in the way,to move shaft enough to put back by hand involves removing bell housing ,rear bearing doesnt even sit flush but is recessed back 1/2 an inch, if you do remove box or manage to refit washers back let us know ,

Good man!

Every day I tell myself I'll not open a beer or bottle of wine when I get home - embarrassingly every evening I fail!!!

long shot, put in neutrel, try spinning the shaft as pulling it back, you centralise bits enough to get it back,..try it in both directions..(if lucky)

as a note, mine never did that the numerous times i replaced the od..

looked at the chance of me removing gearbox with little more than an adjustable spaner, decided i'd got no hope

so thank to your advise i now had an idea, took the tunnel panels out & gearbox side cover off & spent hours fished about with a piece of wire, combined with alot of pushing & jiggling etc, got nowhere, until wifey came out & told me it's time to scrap it, & sudenly it when back !

fitted overdrive bit, & found missing thrust washer, but that ebay for you, managed to fashion one out bit old scrap. just been round the block apears to work. try longer run to work tomorrow before fitting floor back.

any sugestion or pictures on how to conected the linkage lever up, as it's off a range rover it's postion under middle seat ? got a stick for tomorrows outing

also i asume everone know this but i didn't, theres a magnet pick up bolt next to gear box fill plug, never cleaned it got christmas tree size lump of metal bit's, is there any other i should be checking ?

cheers for advise
