I have a 1987 110 with a 200tdi disco engine.

History since i've had it: timing belt went - replaced
new head gasket and head skimmed
valve stem seals
checked injectors/bores/pistons by eye

Symptoms: Breathing v heavily through rocker cover
lots of white smoke
misfire on cylinder 3
huge power loss

My only thought is piston rings? any other suggestions

Thanks in advance

Josh

Well you've narrowed it to no.3 cylinder. Heavy smoke would suggest injector is working, but maybe not correctly. A "visual" check won't show up a good or bad spray pattern or opening pressure.
Swap no.3 injector for no.1 and see if the problem moves, or take all 4 for a test which s usually free in a decent injection specialist as it only takes them 10 mins.

If all is good with injectors, compression test to check out no.3 bore. Now this will show up normal or poor combustion pressure, which could be either bad compression rings or a cracked head, usually around a valve seat. I know which one my moneys on because I've been there. If it is rings, or at least a broken Ring, I'd be considering doing all of them and glaze busting the bores while your in there.

Injector test, compression test. If compression is bad the heads coming off, then a proper head pressure test will show up a crack. Again, guess how I know... I've done more than one. :D

Also always good practice to introduce yourself before the big guns come out of the woodwork :fighting:

yeah swapped injectors and makes no difference, just meant hadnt taken them in anywhere. so looks like compression test next step, thanks for your help.
I didnt realise this was as personal as introductions will get on that right away haha

thanks again
