Hi folks,

Need some help on some trouble shooting, or the areas I can check myself before I drive my Freelander to the dealer.

There is a rattling noise coming from the front right of my car. The noise is not very consistent, but usually it occurs when I drive around 30 - 50 km/h. I believe it doesn't happen when the car is cold, but more when I just took some highways and then enter urban areas. The noise is not related to the revs of the car, so it doesn't seem engine related to me. It's more when I accelerate and then release the gas, the car gives a rattle. Not fully sure if it also slows down actually. There is (sometimes) also a bit of a banging sound.

Perhaps a bit vague but what I ruled out so far is:
- VCU - Checked and confirmed working
- Engine issue - It doesn't increase or decrease depending on the engine RPM

It seems suspension related, but perhaps anyone would have a clue on things I could check?

Regards,
Marc

Yes, check for play in the drop link on the anti roll bar. Can be done with wheel turned and kneeling beside car.

Drop links & check roll bar rubber bushes. Also check steering joints for play, and loose brake pads.

Doubt you will need to change the anti-roll bar, nothing to go wrong with it.
Don't have a Freelander but I doubt droplinks will cost much, probably not best to buy the cheapest though.

The drop links seem fine to me?

Although just checking and wondering, if the car is in neutral and I move it by hand just half a meter, it’s normal for the VCU to turn right?

Also checked the steering joints but no play on there.

I do notice however that the car leans in quite far in corners. Steers a bit like a boat?

Quick update.

Suspension needs to be replaced (which I knew). The rubber cap is attached with some new grease.

The sound is still there, but starting to doubt whether it’s suspension related (nothing strange to be found, perhaps worn out suspension ) or whether it’s coming from the middle. IRD or perhaps gearbox?

I can only hear the sound when I drove highway and then drive around 40 km/h.. when accelerating the sound fades away again.

You have checked that driveshaft for play when you replaced the rubber boot?
