Hi guys I'm a new member here so would like to say hello to you all!

I've got a 2005 1.8 freelander with about 70k on the clock, basically I was driving up a steady hill today and just before I could change the gear I heard something give way, after which came a series of rattles and mechanical clanking noises which scared the lights out of me so I parked it up there and then, on closer inspection I can see something hanging off but I have no idea what I'm looking at, can anyone help me?

part of the vcu coupling and no its not supposed to come of (solution can be temporary or permanent your choice really)
remove the complete front to rear propshaft
your car will them only be 2 wheel drive which will drive fine until such time you get a new vcu coupling replaced and refit the propshaft
its a pretty simple job removing the prop bolts front and rear and 2 centre bearing carriers
 
No need to remove prop, just cut the damper off.
Common problem, and many run without the damper on, the V6 doesn't have a damper on anyway.
 
It's just the dampener. Get a hacksaw or preferably a disk cutter and chop it off for now. I would soon be thinking about if it needed a vcu as it might be nearing "past it's best"
You can't just sort that out with a hacksaw if that goes wrong!
 
Hi guys thanks for your help! I will just get it chopped off then but as I've left it parked up a couple of streets away should I risk driving it home or am I just going to damage something else? The noise is scary!
 
If it were mine and only a couple of streets away I'd crawl underneath and tie wrap it back in place then drive home really steady then sort it out properly.
 
Cable ties and gaffer tape are your best friends to do roadside fixes on so many things.

I wish I had a pound for every cable tie I have ever used :D
 
you can buy that part separately but if it has done that then I would think about changing the lot of the vcu and bearings
 
The amount of breakdowns that I have limped back with cable ties and gaffa tape is massive. I always have them in my car. Don't take up much space and when they are there you'll be surprised how much you actually use them!
 
thanks for your help guys, I used some cable ties and managed to get it home but noticed on the drive home the traction control light and hill descent light are on. Could this be related to the damper? sorry for all the questions guys, it's my first freelander and I don't really know much about it!
