Defender 110 200 tdi 1990.

Took the dipstick sleeve mount out a while ago to get the starter motor out. The sleeve can go in a variable amount before nut locks it. How much should be in or out as it will alter the dipstick reading, can anyone measure for me please?
Secondly, I never get a "clean" dipstick reading, always smeared so makes assessing oil level very difficult! Any suggestions welcome

I had the exact same problem while back , the way i got round it was by draining the eng oil and refil it to the exact amount as LR say, in my case been 200 tdi=6.8 lt inc oil filter, then i pushed the DS tube in far enough so as to get the oil to read to the max of the d stick, and tighten the nut upon the tube. I know it's doing the job the long way round, but if you don't get any joy about the length of the tube i gues you have a chance this way.

It mesures=27 cm from the top of the DS tube, to the top of the D stick tube nut on the eng block 1991 200tdi.

Sorted. Took old one out and it was about 4 inches in too far!
Got new one and your 27cm is spot on
