I've got a little USB endoscope that plugs in my laptop (which unfortunately is bust) but I might be able to poke it up the sump plug and have a look around ... I hope!

I cant remember but if you google it appears thecrank always breaks in the same place, gives you an idea where to look.
 
I don't know anything about this engine but the TD5 has a stiffener plate above the sump which would block access.

Access is a total and utter bar-steward. Had a text last night and he'd dropped the oil. Nothing obvious. He replaced the oil and now the oil light comes on immediately and stays on. So, it could be the oil pump has gone. It certainly sounds like it. He started taking the top apart and then decided there was just too much junk and not enough time (he works seven days a week already) so he's listed it on eBay and is just writing it off as a bad experience.
 
Just to finish this story off.

The car was bought by a Land Rover mechanic. He's pretty sure the crank has snapped. Says these engines are notorious for it and he does about 3 a week!

Obviously my mate is gutted and he's lost a serious amount of cash on this episode of Land Rover ownership but what can you do when the Green Oval Goblin sneaks up and kicks you in the knackers? One thing is for certain, I wouldn't touch a Disco 4 diesel with yours. I'll stick with my old P38, thank you very much.
