So, this afternoon I decided my aim was to attach my Safari snorkel!

Well, i didn't achieve that. I didn't even come close.

Under my bonnet, I have a second battery in front of the left wheel arch and one of the EGR components and the cruise control thing (?) are sitting loose where the standard Land Rover airbox should be.

I plan on removing the EPG alltogether and putting a plate over the manifold, but where should I move the cruise control thing to?

I also have the bonnet-lift detector of the alarm system just above where the airbox should go. I imagine this will be able to stay where it is though.

So... the snorkel comes in the side of the left wing, exactly where it should. On the air intake is a cone-shaped K&N air filter, which will obviously have to go.

I paid a visit to RJ Land Rovers today and they kindly sold me a brand new standard Land Rover airbox. They had no idea what to so about my snorkel though. They appear to know very little about snorkels in general actually and say they don't fit many, generally. Their advice was to look on the Internet to see if I could figure out what parts I was missing!

Here are my problems...

My brand new airbox seems to have a few holes in the bottom (look like they were there as it was molded). These holes are on the "correct" side of the filter I believe, but will obviously suck in water given the opportunity!

I then need a way to block off the hole in the front of the aibox where the air would normally enter.

Finally, I need a way of making a new hole in the airbox for the snorkel to attach to, I need a way of routing the snorkel intake around to that hole, and I then need a way of attaching the airbox to the engine intake pipe!

What parts do I already have? None. Just the snorkel (already attached to the vehicle) and a brand new airbox (sitting on my back seat at the moment).

So... any advice??

there are parts that would have origonallly come with the snorkel that make up the bits you need, aswell as the instructions on which holes to block off and where to drill the new one

well, i figured that, but finding those parts and finding someone who knows about them seems to be impossible. I phoned one of the two UK distributers of Safari parts and they told me to phone "Devon 4x4", who seem to know nothing about the snorkel.

Everywhere I turn is a dead end... I can't believe it's turning into such a nightmare actually!

mine's a 300tdi... so if I return the 300TDi airbox and buy a 200TDi airbox, then all I need are two bits of pipe and 4 jubilee clips?

Even better the 200 box is really a canister with a metal tube sticking out the side and it fits direct to the snorkel so ya only need 1 pipe & 3 jubilee clips. :D

Fantastic!

And a brand new 200TDi airbox doesn't have holes in the molding, like the 300TDi one, does it??

Nope the holes in the 300 are for the rubber feet that bolt to the wing and hold the box in place. 200 has 2 large round straps on a bracket that bolts to wing and clips round airbox.

Oh and 200 is metal not plastic.

presumably i'll need to find a drill to make some holes in the wing to mount the 200 airbox then, right?

Does that then mean the 200 airbox will mount lengthways front to back (i.e. the longest dimension going from front to back)?

If so, presumably the snorkel then goes in the side of the airbox and the air then travels out of one end (the end at the back) into the intake manifold?

Yes Yes Yes. get a 2nd hand one and make sure ya get the straps with it. Plenty of ebay usually..

I've not fitted anything yet. The previous owner fitted the actual snorkel up the side of the vehicle, and yes - it pokes through the wing into the engine bay. I'll take a photo tomorrow when it's daylight.

Basically, the snorkel intrudes into the engine bay by a couple of inches just in front of the ABS unit (through the hole made where it was supposed to be).

Then, where standard Land Rover airbox should be, there is the EGR control thing and the cruise-control control thing. The EGR thing will be gone soon (assuming I'm actually capable of doing that on my own!), but will the cruise control thing be able to stay there once the 200TDi airbox is in place?

there appears to only be one 200TDi airbox in all of eBay! up to £30, one bid, 3 days to go. Surely it'd be almost cheaper to buy new?!?

And what's the small pipe poking up out of the larger output pipe?

So many unknowns... I can't believe there isn't just a single, tried and tested method of doing this... I'm beginning to wish I could just pay someone to do it for me, but every garage i've asked doesn't know how!

Are the Defender ones different.

There should be a 65 ish mm tube coming out of one side or the other !.

Del.

Small pipe is breather pipe. and there is a simple solution. Get a disco 200tdi airtfilter box.
