Spitfiremk1uk, has been rebuilding a 3.5 for me trials 80 inch. All new Brgs seals gaskets all sorted and back together! Ow and a set of his stage 1 heads!

Fitted with my low profile remote oil filter adaptor and some other bits n bobs to fit the series 1. Can't wait to get it all complete and dropped in to start!! Woop!!

Not shiney, not Bling just rebuilt.

Looking good Jai, would suggest you get a stud kit to mount exhaust manifolds though, them bolts do tend to get stuck easily if you know what I mean.

I use stainless manifold bolts, slightly longer than standard to grab as much thread as possible and copper slip to protect the heads. also carefully torqued.

i find studs annoying, although i suppose you could loctite them into the heads?

then they would be much better i guess.

Aye well not the from your place that will be machined down to as light as I dare for another engine to be built at a Later date. It has an sd1 flywheel but as it has an
Old 9 inch clutch per 9.5 the clutch cover is only 2
Pin and a huge mass of coil springs and
Chunks of thick steel compared to the later finger type seems
Pointless lightening the flywheel and bolting on a heavy clutch cover.

Next engine will be a beasty but not until I get some fun
Putter this one!!

Gotta be somwhere around that i suspect maybe 165ish. Its an sd1 with stage 1 heads the exhaust is poor tbh would love some headers but I need the thing ready to trial getting ****ed orf with loads a work an no play!! Watching ccv is painful knowing yours is halfway there!!!

Not got lots of money to throw at it so rangy manifolds will have to do for now.

Not to fussed about bhp figure it's almost 3 times
More grunt than a std series 1 and low end grunt is everything being able to stamp the throttle in 3rd get low box and have it climb from 700rpm up is what I'm after.

the v8s are very good at lurching around in low box, i can use my throttle as an on/off switch almost which is handy, and like you say, a must for successful trialling i guess.

best o' luck wi' it :)

you can fit the newer manifolds which are much better than the old cast ones.

thought that was p5b and the p6 was 155-165 (depending on compression) with the early heads. pretty sure the sd1 was 190 bhp but that may well only have been the efi ones with the better heads like mine (yet to be re-built)

EFI version was ment to have 190hp, carb model 155hp. P6 had 143hp I think

I was assuming it was a RR 3.5 with carbs hence my low estimation. stage one heads should give an extra 20-30hp assuming you tune your carbs on RR so you could get 175-185ish HP.

What g box you using for this? Or is it all on defender running gear? I've got a 86" and a rover sd1 High comp on carbs to go in so would be very interested to know how you've done it.

But mine will be for driving not trialling :D

Using original gearbox with an adaptor plate

The oil filter will need to be relocated as the axle will most certainly come up and wipe it out. You need a set of exhaust manifolds that hug the block and a very short waterpump/front housing. You will also need the smaller type startermotor because the front props haft is close whn your axle
OS at full compression

ive got an adapter plate on it but not sure if its for an S1 or S2a. and ive got the remote oil filter kit to try and avoid that.

what about the engine mounts, and the radiator?

Engine mounts I have we're already fabricated to fit a v8 but Steve Parker used to do them.

Radiator I'm going to be using a 200 to rad but think I will
Need to eventually go down the v8 rad route because for driving on road or racing the tdi rad seems just too small. For trials it'll be fine with a leaky fan will see just how hot it gets and report back I think as above it'll not be man enough tho.
