I have bad rattle, and would appreciate your input. Started a year ago, gradually got worse. Replaced clutch, flywheeel, fork, release bearing etc.

No change, but anything only a little worse now. Rattle when driving but really bad when the clutch is being depressed.

Could it be output shaft bearing from the lt230?

Defender TD5, manual transmission btw

looking forward to get your input!

When clutch is depressed the gearbox is disconnected from the engine, so un likely any thing to do with lt230 .
With the truck stood still and in gear with clutch depressed and engine running is the rattle still there ?

As tottot says check when stationary. You can try different combinations of each box in neutral.

Also check your heater pipes and other bits at the back of your engine. Mine rattled a lot at idle because the pipes were touching something and the engine vibrates more at idle. Same goes with exhaust and mountings, my exhaust gets very close to the gearbox crossmember depending on the rotation of the middle silencer.

Thank you for input, for sure I will give it a check. However the rattle is not a continued rattle, it only occurs for a second or so when the clutch is pushed to the floor, and only when fully depressed. By this, I am thinking the release energy in the transmission could do funny noises anywhere ....

Have known the clutch drive plate itself to rattle when all pressure from flywheel and pressure plate are removed.
Possible causes, worn splines on input shaft, worn spigot bearing, poorly fitting splines on clutch plate.
Do the test at stand still, put transfer box in neutral and run through the gears as if driving along.

Hi Buckhandle, merry Christmas!
Was your issue resolved as advised by James?

I have a S3 with the exact same symptoms. Clutch down in gear change rattle at bell housing. Drive all fine. All gears comfortably found. Tested end float earlier on crank, but all nice and tigh as I have done everything on good side. New refurbed box clutch, fork etc.

Just to add a little to this conversation, I have a rattle on my TD5 which is transmission related. I'm not worried because I'm 99% sure it is something outside the gearbox. On the passenger side gearbox mount there's a bit of sheet metal which I think is supposed to act as a heat shield to protect the rubber from the exhaust pipe. Mine has a crack in it and rattles at certain speeds.
Inside the drivetrain, I have been disappointed with the clutch release bearing on these. The bearing looks like a sophisticated unit with the rollers sensibly shielded from dirt on all sides. However, on taking the gearbox off to fit a reconditioned one, I discovered that mine had started disintegrating. The shroud that goes on the engine-facing side had disappeared, and was nowhere to be found in the bellhousing either, so it must have disintegrated pretty comprehensively. You could see the rollers going round. I'd only replaced the clutch 18 months previously and it wasn't a Britpart one - it was Valeo or AP or something similar - some sort of mid-level famous name brand. So something may have come off and be ratting around inside.
