Noticed a low groan "wind down" type noise when I slow down in the TD4 auto. Happens when in a straight line and not breaking - simply allow it to slow. Slightly worse when cornering.

Don't think it's wheel baring as ok when acceleating. Wondering if its normal auto/4x4 transmission noise or a worn prop bearing or dare I say it the IRD could be wearing.

70K on the clock. Any ideas on what to check?

i have similar noise on mine wi 60 k miles manual. hoping its prop bearings. testes viscous joint on hill on full lock and rolled back fine, so at least thats ok. may be worth you trying that test. good luck

Likewise, noticed a slight whine from 60k miles, most of that was in 2wd.
The IRD changes the pitch of the whine when free wheeling.
It would appear that the bearings, start to go at this mileage.
any other input from other members on whining noises might help narrow it down.

Do you mean the prop bearings? This might expain why its slightly worse when turning at speed - although I only hear it as the car slow right down/

No the IRD bearings of which there are 7

Havent got round to changing the bearings yet, some kit to order up.

I will tackle anything mechanically, but changing the bearings is a pig of a job according to Baldbryn of Landrovernet.com

Slightly daunting I have to admit

I;ve seen the kits for about 250 but yes it does look like quite a job. If its not a DIY it's almost worst paying for a new unit at 1K with a potentially big labour bill and still an old IRD.

My "noise" is nothing major, just think it might be starting to go. I might change the oil and the prop bearing 1st to rule them out. Just waiting for some decent weather!

Tyre pressures, i can tell if my tyre pressure is down on one wheel when the trans starts moaning -3/4 psi difference is enough.

The newest tyres should be on the rear as well.
