Afternoon all. My 52 plate dumped a load of transfer fluid this morning. On investigation, it appears that there was a loose bolt on the transfer box. My query is why would there be transmission fluid in the transfer box.

The transfer box is basically a separate gearbox from the main gearbox. The fill plug is on the back next to the handbrake drum (the one with the square hole). Think it uses ep80/90 oil, but you might want to check that

Was it reddish in colour, or more brown, like oil?
Mind you, the ATF that came out of my autobox looked more like Ovaltine!

It was red. I loosened the bolt in question just to make sure and it was definitely red. There didn’t appear to be any contamination with what I understand to be transfer box oil.
