Hi

I've a 2003 4.4 Vogue. The last couple of times I've taken it out it has had an occasional issue changing gear. At small throttle openings, it would occasionally over rev then bang into gear with a bump. This occurred maybe once or twice, not every pull away.

Yesterday it did the same but then went into transmission safe mode, I was few hundred yards from my destination. After being parked for half an hour it drove home fine with no repeat of limp mode.

There is some sort of oil leak, but with uni exams I've not been driving it much and haven't had chance to crawl underneath and check.

I'm hoping if I change the transmission oil (and filter?) and source the leak, that it may head the problem off at the pass.

I see changing the transmission fluid is mentioned in another thread, is there a guide for doing the job?

It has only banged in about 3 times over a lot of pull aways and the fault display once, I suspect (hope) that the leak got worse recently and that's pushed it over the edge

I'll see if I can follow the guide and hopefully that'll do the trick, thank you

You don't really want a leaking gearbox, make sure it's stopped and level is correct at all times.
Also sticking in a bottle of Lucas won't hurt: Lucas Oil Car Transmission Fix Stops Slip Hard Shifting Seal Most Leaks Additive | eBay
 
Looking underneath and the fact I'm losing coolant I suspect either the radiator is goosed or it's coming from the pipes which run under the engine from the transmission to the cooler, I may need to renew these

Having looked through the oil change guide I've a couple of questions:

- What is the best way to identify my box and hence transmission fluid requirement?

- Where is the best place to get a new filter and sump gasket (and possibly oil cooler pipes?) main dealer?

- The 40c part, was that measured on the outside of the sump pan, how temperature dependent is this? can one get it up to warm to the touch and that will be ok? was the action of working it through the gears enough to raise the temperature?

- Once started it has to be kept going? I'll have to get someone to sit in the car as I'll have to do it on the road : P

Yours is a 2003 4.4 V8 and will have the ZF5HP26 Gearbox
- Where is the best place to get a new filter and sump gasket (and possibly oil cooler pipes?) main dealer?
Filter and Gasket can be had from Main Dealer or a decent aftermarket supplier such as Island4x4 (no affiliation) but make sure your filter is a genuine Filtran

I measured mine using an external temperature probe and it is quite critical to ensure you get the correct oil level, as the oil will expand when it gets warm. Going through the gears is to ensure all the oil ways and galleries are full of oil, so the oil level in the sump is correct.

You need to keep the engine running to ensure the pump is circulating the oil round the system and through the cooler and galleries etc, again to ensure you have the correct oil level in the sump at all times...

No need for someone to be sitting in it...run the engine and get it up to the correct temp and go through the gears a couple of times during the warm up, put it into P and get underneath and check the level then fill if necessary and go back through the gears again...no need to be sitting in it all the time

Is this the model with the gearbox cooler in the rad? If so, you may have coolant in the box.

Excellent, thank you for taking the time to answer, I'm going to have to give this a go on my street, so the helper will be required to ensure someone doesn't try to steal it with me under it :D

I'll grab an IR temp reader from machine mart, any excuse to buy more tools

Aye I believe it's the one with the oil cooler in the rad, seems as I'm losing coolant (and it's not in the engine) I suspect it may be contaminating the box, fingers crossed a good clean out and maybe a new rad sorts it
 
its finished:eek:prob might make it to the bank to withdraw 2k for a recon,ps if you drive it anymore and it bangs you can fracture the gearbox casing which will render it un-reconable:Cry:
 
Cooler not in rad...external to....see my how to on changing the cooler, stat and plate :D
 
cheers for the help guys, I'll get my ass underneath it tomorrow and play hunt the leaks and the get the transmission gasket and filter ordered :D
