Hi everyone

I have an '03 3.0TD L322.

Recently it was juddering a lot especially when idling and at low speeds. I had it checked over at a local garage who said Injector 5 wasn't working. They sourced a second hand injector which was tested and they installed that for me.

The car seemed fine for about 2 days then I noticed:
1 - It was having difficulty starting had to turn it over a lot to get it started
2 - While cruising on a dual carriageway at around 50 - it seemed to slip when I tried to overtake someone and instead a rather loud rattling/clanging sound came out of the bottom of the car (almost like a loose metal plate underneath it) and it seemed to lose power - I pushed the gear lever into sport mode and it seemed OK and got me home
3 - Next time I drove it to see what it does it had difficulty starting again - the rattling/clanging was there pretty much whenever I went to over 30 and tried to accelerate, also it was juddering almost as much as before. Then it also happened in sport mode and then it displayed "trans. failsafe mode" in the dash and didn't seem to going up gears.

Another thing which might be related - radiator fluid has been low a few times recently.

I was near to an Independent Land Rover garage at the time and drove the car there - he advised me to take it back to the garage who did the injector and get them to look at it as he said the car was stlll misfiring and an injector sounded out. He also thought the transmission failsafe was due to the injector problem.

I got the car to the first garage and they agreed to give me a refund and offered to fit another injector which would be refurbished.

Does anyone have any advice on the above situation - I had another injector out late last year and I'm thinking I might as well get the rest all done too if that is the problem.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to say... But it sounds like you have injector issues but most of all your gearbox may be shot !

Have you ever serviced the gearbox ?

I would say drain the oil to check the condition but it's probably too late.

Don't drive the car anymore otherwise you could damage things further ...

Thanks for the responses guys.

I had the car serviced at an independent last year at the same time the Turbo went on it. I'm not sure if they serviced the gearbox.

At the first garage they plugged their computer in and read the codes which pointed to a fault in the injection system and didn't say anything about the gearbox. Also the independent specialist didn't seem to think it was the gearbox. I'm hoping it's not!

Is draining the gearbox oil an easy DIY?

Sort the injector problem before you worry about the box. Oil and filter change is fairly easy to DIY. Make sure you get exactly the correct oil.

The gearbox is not usually part of a service or nor has it ever been a service item since land rover first labelled them as maintenance free ! Which they are certainly not !

Most L322's have never had a gearbox oil / filter change in their life !

OK it probably didn't have that done then because I don't remember them mentioning anything extra.

How easy is it to drain and refill the oil?

Most likely.

Easy to do with the know how and some spanners, funnel and a hose pipe ;)
