Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and could really use some advise.

I have just purchased a 2006 Vogue SE 3.0TD6 with 150,00 on the clock, 3 days in and after a small jolt putting it into drive at traffic lights the transmission fail safe error code has come up and warns me each time I start/stop.

The car seems to drive as normal maybe a little sluggish although I am not sure it might just be me getting used to its weight, it still changes up and down without issues in sport mode and automatic drive.
My brother has a small independent garage with up to date snap on computers, so I am hoping to get it code read this afternoon if the snap on will give me an accurate code or not am not sure.

Any advise or ideas of what I might be looking at replacing/repairing would be much appreciated.

3 days in doesn't bode well imo, last owner may have been having issues and poured some snake oil into it to temporarily mask any problems in order to sell it.
Oil needs inspected for starters.
Dark and smelly is potentially serious.
Worth draining it out and refreshing with new fluid/filter.
Do NOT take advice of oil spec from any old garage, someone on here can advise you correctly on that. It's entirely plausible you have the wrong oil in at the moment.
 
While at the garage check battery and alternator are ok these cars can throw up all sorts of weard stuff if voltage drops, and the vogue needs the biggest battery you can get in there, and as said above gearbox oil must be the correct one or it buggers the box up.
 
Thanks guys, I am praying I don't have to replace it as has had a reconditioned one already at 130,000 miles by a 4x4 specialist garage :/
The small jolt is what concerns me, felt like when a manual car pops out of gear?
 
20k on recon box, you'd hope that all would be well there.

As Brian says, battery could be the trigger, I now recall similar with mine, can't remember now if it was before the new battery or not, but it healed itself anyway.
I may have tried a battery disconnect at the time, if you do that remember to read the instructions regarding waiting time between ignition off and disconnect, 20 minutes should suffice.
This allows all modules to enter sleep mode.

Having said all that I'm sure the gearbox will enter fail mode if it has a cooling issue, box will shift differently trying to prevent overheating.

Lot's to consider.
 
I have a feeling the previous owner did this as the clocks went set which did make me wonder why, thanks I will get the code read then give this an go and update.
 
Ok so I just got in and drove 40 miles, no code warning on start up or the whole way to the garage. I hope it's still stored it?

Sooo was that me trying to get into drive and take my foot off the brake to move too quickly?
 
Is this your first auto?
I've had dozens and the correct method is wait a second or two until you feel drive engage, then proceed, after engagement full bore accel won't ordinarily hurt it.
A hurried engagement may well have thrown a code if you blipped throttle a few milliseconds early.

Did they erase the code?
 
First one for a very long time. Seems I must have had my right foot on the accelerator as I put it in drive maybe.
Cleared the code and one other for steering wheel position but apart from that totally clear and all good. Hopefully I didn't damage anything but I'm very relieved it appears to be fine now.... phew!
Going to have the gearbox serviced to be safe.

Il be looking at changing the memory module for the seat as the steering wheel seems to have a mind of it own when I put the key in and out but not every time, I can deal with it for now though

Just checking, you know that the steering wheel is meant to move each time you 'put the key in and out'? It moves in for ease of entrance /exit and out to last position used.

Hi, yes :) it does this fine sometimes but other times the motor runs continuously until I press the lever and then it doesn't go up or down only in and out.
Then some other times when I put the key in it goes all the way down and squashes my legs unless I stop it first? Or up to the top of its range and then the motor still sounds like it running. Somethings definitely not right.

*Another gearbox Update*.... I went to go take the dog out last night and put it in drive, the engine revved up but wouldn't move forward. I panicked and reversed back up the drive way which is on a gradient and decided it was definitely broken :( until my lodger who said he knows a little bit about them suggested they won't engage when cold if the gearbox oil is low but will get reverse because its lower in the box?
He suggested letting it warm up and try again, which worked perfectly! My question is will I damage it if I drive it for another day or two until I can get the gearbox serviced? Approximately 80miles a day.
I'm thinking this might be why I had the issue the other day too when it didn't engage properly?

Yep, any suspicion of low oil or any other issues, stop using it. Hire/borrow a car for a day or two if necessary, cheaper than the alternative!
 
Ok I won't drive it except to the garage to get it looked at.

Apart from oil level/condition what other checks should I be looking at doing??

No codes this time, the only other this is it feels like there's a little kick when you go into drive like you feel it engaging or not engaging smoothly. I'm hoping that just the low oil making it difficult.

Is there a way to check this sonnex valve that I've read about?

Any help is much appreciated!

Well that was an experience Had it up on the ramp, warm but not hot and took out the oil filler plug on the top left side and litres of oil came out I was expecting none or a dribble not tons......

Now I'm worried ☹️
