can anyone help i have had trouble with the selection of high 4 wheel drive but the lever springs straight back up . i lifted the floor on the drivers side to find the cover on the end of the transfer box and managed to undo the 3 bolts but the cover still wont come of because of a bracket on the top of the cover that goes into the slot around the pin can it be cut off ?

**** NO
that pin is the 4x4 selectior locking pin

unscrew the yellow knob and remove the spring
find the pivet bolt that the 4x4 selector moves on and unscrew that
now lift the pin from the top the transfer box
you can now remove the little cover

it sounds to me like you got an internal transfer box fault and it needs striping totally and investigating
all that cover will show is the end of the selecter rods

i didnt mean cut the pin just the thin metal bracket on the cover.
but will try and undo the pivot bolt and see if it will come over the pin but dont think it will.

once you get the cover and locking pin off the 4wd should come out under by itself under spring pressure byitself, it might be a bit rusty, clean it up with wire brush,wd40 they are pretty tough inside, try pulling on the end of the shaft first see if it comes out
it should move with the transfer gear lever

Mine has a little cutout in the bracket, sounds like one of the previous owners has dobe it.
Pobs has a point, does sound like an issue within the box, soak everything in wd and if its still the same then you've got a little job on.

spent today working on the landy and have found a problem the yellow knob is down but when i took the casing off the middle rod is out and you can see where the pin sits in it
when i pull the red lever back the rod goes back in and the yellow lever pops back up, to return the red lever back to high i have to press the yellow lever back down and it stays down when the red lever goes back to high (confused yet) is it me or is everything working backwards.HELP.

so what you cant just push the red leaver forward to get back to high ?

it sounds like the selecter arms inside the transfer are all missa aligned
needs stripping and sorting

is that a big job i have never stripped a gear box or is it easier to go for second hand option

not that big a job as long as your mechaniclly minded otherwise you can make it worse

took me a day to sort mine out and thats with a ramp and a major tool kit

so just to understand

when driving in 2wd
1) can you now press the yellow lever down and go into 4wd ok. (shaft with hole moves forwards)

2) when stationary you can go from 2wd to low ratio 4wd by pulling back the red lever (yellow lever up) and go back to 2wd ok

but if you are in 4wd drive and want to get back to 2wd you can pull red lever back but not push it forwards unless the yellow knob is pressed down again?

i dont think i have 2 wheel drive because when the red lever is forward in the high position the yellow one is down
i then pull the red lever back and the yellow one pops up and has to be pressed back down or the red lever wont go back
strange one isnt it.

i just took out the transfer box out from underneath as 1 unit then striped it down cleaned everything up and made sure all the selectors are working correctlly then simply refitted the transferbox

thanx a lot now i know what i have to do i will look for some instructions my brother got his own garage lokks like he's gonna be roped in
