"That was the point I was making, Landies were not built for 100 MPH road work, anyone driving a Landie on UK roads at 100 MPH should be locked in a very deep dungen with only "FAST BOY RACER CAR MAG" to read and a PS2 car racing game.:D"

Exactly and I agree with that however to achive a decent cruising speed where the engine is relaxed and not running at its limits you have a by-product (which in this case is achievable silly speeds).
My old 2.5NA D would pull top gear in most conditions but to make decent progress on a long journy I had my floor nailed to the floor, it would pull 70MPH but its comfortable crusing speed (which left a little in reserve for hills, overtaking etc) while ensuring long term reliability was about 60MPH. The TDI on higher gearing however will cruise all day at 75MPH while still running well below maximum revs and returns a decent MPG figure, driving it is much more relaxed.

"If I do 60 in mine and have to go round a corner I start bricking it!!
1984 CSW, no anti roll bars on mine and skinny off road tyres...."

That's a very closely related issue, if the vehicle isn't up to the job then it shouldn't be driven at or beyond its limits but remember that not every vehicle is the same. While a LR will never be a high speed cruiser or sharp handling sprts car they can be set up to provide a very stable platform which holds the road, steers and brakes exceptionally well for its shape/size.
Road biased tyres putting down lots of rubber (separate set for serious off road work of course), stiff standard height springs, decent gas shocks, good bushes, vented discs with decent pads & braided hoses, steering properly set up with tracking checked regually etc all makes for a fine handling vehicle which still performs off road when required to do so. Just becuase it has proved itself to be a good motorway tool as well, it hasn't detracted from all its other uses and it is still most definately an all purpose vehicle.

As far as I am aware it can be done in situ but you will need to drop it down to get to the top of the box.

This thread is starting to sound like a grandad speaking to a son.
What mt intentions was to point out that my landy will do 80mph and I am on the box which is at the other end of the scale. I have been told that fitting a disco box makes your gear a bit over the top with 235/85s or 265/75s but I mist say I have been thinking about it myself. Are they trying to say that there are no discoverys out there with 235/85s on....WRONG. Anyway the fact is if his landy is struggleing to get some speed now with the standard box on then he has a proble with the engine or suchlike. My box is the 1.6 which is fit to the 90 2.5 n/a the defender 200tdi / 300tdi are fit with the 1.4 ratio and the discoverys are fit with the 1.2 ratio so in theory my truck is alot Higher geared than anybodys so my top end speed will be lower.... 80mph is my limit the engine is revved out thus I dont do this speed often well once tbh. Also I have had 2 times when I have had to take drastic action. Once was a bloke in a car with NO rear lights what so ever doing 60mph well back from him and a bit of day dreaming thrown in there for good measures I suddenly found myself on top of a car. Hit the brakes ( HUMM THATS A WASTE OF TIME ) had to steer up the banking and round him. Wet muddy grass banking. Glad I had me off road tyres on at that point. Turns out the bloke was lost and had hit his brakes to turn off the road did not even think about looking behind him... I got a appology. Second time I realy wished I had not got 4 wheels and tyres strapped to the roof and my off road tyres on. Wet night on a road I dont know nice and straight and my trusty candles just about lighting the road up. OH DEAR there is a roundabout coming up and I am going to fast. BRAKES......... Started to slide sideways then over corrected it started to slide the other way then regained control. My rear cylinder had produced a leak and the brakes was out of balance. The tyres and wheels on the roof did not help thought I was going to have it over. So your original post " Wait untill you have to avoid something by swerving at those speeds....Landies were never built for speed! " Been there mate and NO I dont want to do it again.

"That's a very closely related issue, if the vehicle isn't up to the job then it shouldn't be driven at or beyond its limits"

That was the point I made, without being modded a landie should not be used at 100 MPH!!!!!

"Road biased tyres putting down lots of rubber (separate set for serious off road work of course), stiff standard height springs, decent gas shocks, good bushes, vented discs with decent pads & braided hoses, steering properly set up with tracking checked regually etc all makes for a fine handling vehicle which still performs off road when required to do so. I have to disagree with you, even with the mods you mention the landy would be danderous at 100 mph, it's too high off the ground with too much suspension travel, swerve yours at 70 mph and see if you live to tell the tale...............Most cars without mod would be ok, I think it's a dangerous and stupid thing to be saying a landy can be set up for 100 mph road work, the young geezer with the new Landy may well try it and kill himself. Another nail in the coffin against 4x4's like a Landy which are not for high speed road work whatever you try to say to justify it.

Achuakh I am hopefully changing my daughters (HotTotty 85) transfer box over the weekend to a 1.22. It can be done with the gearbox in, the most important thing to take into cosideration is the weight of the transfer box when re-fitting as it is very easy to damage the main shaft seal and this would only show up once you started driving it.

My post about lack of grunt from my def 90.Ifollowed the avice from chipped td5 and blanked off the egr on the exaust.Perhaps it is wishful thinking but the first short drive seemed mucu, much better .I will carry out the other checks a s a p. Thanks.:)

I'm impressed with the knowledge that you chaps have. My original post about a defender strugling to 65 has prompted a no of comments.I am happy to plod around at about 50/55 most of the time in my 1997 defender. My original post was to the effect that it seemed to strugle after that. A friend of mine has the same year discovery which he says! cruises at 80 all day! It also has the 300tdi engine with the same mileage,85,000.I would be interested to know what the injector tweaks are as mentione as blanking off the e r g has sha own an improvment. Thanks every one.

100MPH in a landy?
I suggest having a word with Bowler unless you have a death wish.....
If I do 60 in mine and have to go round a corner I start bricking it!!
1984 CSW, no anti roll bars on mine and skinny off road tyres....

I've got a chipped 52 plate TD5 van with an uprated intercooler and some fat road tyres. I've taken it to 110mph, before running out of road! It was screaming like f**k though and I cringed to think how much juice it was drinking!

I don't usually take it above 70 though for the same reasons (I was just testing it out), but am looking at changing the transfer box once I've done some more research into it, mainly for comfort and economy at cruising speeds.
