Hi All.

I have a 1984 Petrol Series 3. The Yellow Lever is stuck in the 4 wheel drive position and the Red lever is stuck in the forward position. I would appreciate any help you can offer.

remove the tin cover over end of the shafts and see if outer shaft is jammed it will effect red lever and yellow
 
Yellow lever will only pop up when the red lever is pulled back into low box. If the red lever won't move the shaft is probably stuck where it goes into the transfer box housing.

As James says remove the gearbox tunnel and lubricate.....pouring boiling water over the housing where the shaft enters often frees it up.

Once free clean, lubricate again and work it.
 
My yellow lever was stuck due to the vehicle having sat for years. Taking the tunnel off and degreasing around the part where the rods enter the box. Cleaning up and lubricating the actuator rods helped 100%.
 
Hi All.

Problem sorted. I did not put a washer at the bottom of the spring on the lever and the spring got jammed between the plate and the lever preventing it from popping up. I also oiled all the joints. Working perfect now. Really appreciate all your advice.

I posted the following in the Range Rover section, only got 1 reply, which I have not checked yet. You guys in the Series section seem to be more helpful. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

"I have a 2000 P38. 2.5 Diesel Automatic. Every time I fill up with Diesel the engine will cutout after driving anywhere between 5 and 50 miles. This could happen 4 or 5 times but as the fuel level in the tank falls, the problem is gone until the next fill up. On some occasions it will puff out a cloud of black smoke. If I leave it sit for a few minutes it will always start and drive fine. Any ideas what might be wrong".

Sediment in the tank? Adding new fuel swirls everything about. Might need the tank flushed. Does it happen if you drive over a very bumpy road at speed?
