How do I know if the Transfer Box is kaput.

This Defender is quite noise although this is mainly down to nil sound proofing, however there appears to be a prominent groaning during the general road running. It is a 300TDi with an R830 gearbox. I am able to select all gears without any real issue and there appears to be good pull without any distinctive delay. I'm a little concerned that this is the knock of death but I am not sure.

If anyone has any ideas I would welcome any input!!!

Failing this does anyone have a good working transfer box suitable for a Defender 300TDi for sale. Depending on whether the gearbox has incurred any damage I may also be looking to purchase a good used one.

As always thanks guy's :5bcheers2:

It's not really aloud clonking type of noise, rather a loud groaning noise. It drives off without any obvious issues. Someone suggested that it might be the transfer box but i am unsure.

Yes, unfortunately changing the oil appears to have made no difference!!

I'm concerned, if it is only the transfer box I am sure I will be able to source a good used one, however if the gearbox is also broken I will be stumped!!

id check your prop ujs first for any play ,then try with one prop off at a time in diff lock

Thanks James I will try this tomorrow once I get back from work. Is there anything else I need to be potentially looking at. Will just be my luck that it is something stupidly expensive. :(

Apologies no they are not mud tyres. Off the top of my head I can not remember what I have on, everything is totally standard.

I knackered my tranny earlier this year during a day out on Salisbury plain. It would still drive ok, all gears engaged, etc but when driving there was a horrible rattling/grinding sound that never went away  went to a couple of mechanics I know and they both said swapping the box for a recon one was the easiest solution.

hope it's just a UJ!

That's sums up my issue precisely. :)

How much can I expect to pay for a good used or possibly reconditioned transfer box?! Pretty disparate now!!!

Gutted £400 exchanged!!! I think I might just purchase the master upgrade kit and give it ago myself. Any advice or videos would be very helpful.
